Effect of Temperature on the Erythrocytes Sedimentation Rate Values in Healthy and Patient's Blood Samples in Basrah Province

Abstract

Objective: this research was conducted to study the effect of environmental temperature on erythrocytes sedimentation rate values (ESR) in blood samples from healthy and patients in Basrah Province.Methodology: the present study was carried out using (120) blood samples from healthy (30 samples) and patients groups (90 samples) for both males and females, patients group included (30) samples from each of diabetic and rheumatoid arthritis patients and (15) samples for each of hypertension and sickle cell anemia patients. ESR tests were done using Westergren method with three temperatures (15oC, 25oC and 45oC) in which 25oC represented control temperature.Results: Results show significant differences in ESR values in both 15oC and 45oC temperature as it compared with ESR values in 25oC in all of the previous groups. Sickle cell anemia group were more affected with temperature changes as reflected by the percentage of increasing (114.5%) or decreasing percentage (57.97%).Conclusion: Erythrocytes sedimentation rate (ESR) values were more affected with increased in environmental temperature than the decreasing.Recommendation: ESR test must be done in (20-25 )oC, as well as environmental temperature must mentioned with results.
