Developing the Academic Concept of the Self for the Students of Psychological Counseling

Abstract

Many students face the difficulties of study not because of the weakness of their mental abilities, but because they have got an idea of themselves that they are incapable of working and academic achievements. One of these difficulties is that some of them do not agree with their academic specialization or realize their academic self-esteem. Thus, the purpose of this research is to design a scale for the academic concept of the self so as to measure the level of self-concept for the students of psychological counseling and explore the differences between them on the basis of the study grade and gender variables. This study also aims to find the psychometric characteristics of the scale such as the stability and reliability as it has been extracted the apparent reliability, sincerity of discrimination and internal consistency of the items. The stability is extracted by Alpha Cronbach and has got (0.739). The scale, in its final format, consists of (56) items distributed on (8) fields. The scale is applied on a sample made up of (180) male and female students from the second and fourth stages. As for the statistical methods, the researchers use a lot of them in statistical program (SPSS) in accordance with the goal of research. This shows the following results: There are no differences of statistical significance between students, regarding the variable of the classroom. Concerning the gender variable, there are significant differences between males and females in the second stage whereas there are no differences of statistical significance between the males and females in the fourth stage. In the light of these results, the researchers make some recommendations and suggestions
