The Rights of Media Professionals within the Framework of the Legislation in Kurdistan Province

Abstract

The importance of talking about the rights of journalists stems from the importance of the activities they carry out, their impact on society, and their effectiveness in vital sectors. Interest in the rights of the journalists has become of great importance, because the acquisition of their rights is not only related to themselves, but rather affects the performance of the media, its broadcasting of correct information and facts, public awareness, and the formation of public opinion. In addition to the importance of the topic for media professionals, unions and legislative authorities.In domestic and international reports, we often hear figures and statistics about violations against journalists, the deprivation of their rights and their accountability. This research came with the aim of dealing with this topic and treating it scientifically and explaining its multiple directions, in addition to the need for journalists to be aware of their rights, the obstacles ahead, and the role and legislation in ensuring them, and one of the other problems of the research is the statement of media opinion regarding the level of awareness of them and their acquisition and protection of their rights.For the sake of that, the research consisted of three main chapters. During the first chapter, the methodological framework that includes a problem, importance, objectives and type of research was presented along with a description of the research community and its sample, in addition to defining the most important terms and referring to the most prominent previous researches in this field.The second chapter is devoted to dealing with the topics of the theoretical research, to explain the concept of the right language and terminology and how it is contained in international conventions and mention its types and the reasons that lead to persistence on those rights through its impact on areas of life with obstacles that hinder the acquisition of rights for journalists.The third chapter proclaims the outcomes of the field research conducted with the participation of a sample of journalists working in the media of Kurdistan Region in terms of their awareness of their rights and their acquisition of special rights and their outlook on the role of legislation in protecting their rights. The researcher was able to reach several scientific conclusions, and many essential recommendations were made in order to improve the journalists obtaining their rights and enabling them to perform their professional duties better and more freely.
