The effect of Awassi ewes drenching with vitamin E in concentration of TSH and thyroid hormones

Abstract

This study was conducted at the animal farm of the department of Animal Science, College of Agriculture, University of Tikrit, during the period from December 5, 2019 till February 3, 2020. The experiment included 20 ewes of Awassi breed at the age of 2.5-4years with an average weight of 45 kg. The animals were divided into four groups (5 ewes/group). To study the effect of drenching vitamin E at levels (350, 525 and 700mg) for the first, second, and third groups respectively, while the control one was drenching with normal saline, a one-off dose at the start of the experiment. The results showed the significant (p<0.05) differences at days 21 , 42 and 63 observed between groups First 350mg, second 525mg , Third 700mg and control. The TSH concentration (2.34±0.37 mIU/L) in First group drenching with vitamin E 350mg were significantly (p<0.05) higher than those of second group 525mg (0.36±0.13 b mIU/L) at day 21. While there was no significant effect of vitamin E in 42 and 63day between First group 350mg , Third group 700mg and control group. Also the results of the statistical analysis showed that there were a significant (p≤0.05) high concentration of hormone T3 in second group drenched with vitamin E with a dose 525mg at 21 day (0.21±2.01) mUI/L compared with First group and control (0.33±1.35) and (1.42±0.21) mUI/L respectively. On the 42 day concentration of hormone T3 has been significantly increased (P<0.05) in groups first and second (1.58±0.32) and (2.06±0.18) mUI/L respectively compared with third group which drenched 700mg of vitamin E (0.76±0.06) mUI/L. Furthermore, on 63 day second group increased concentration of hormone T3 (2.42±0.28) mUI/L significantly (P<0.05) compared with third group (1.83±0.17) mUI/L and control (1.85±0.14) mUI/L. Thyroxine concentration at days 21, 42 and 63. On day 21 that the levels of the hormone thyroxine significantly increased in the second group with 525 mg compared to the first and control group, while it did not differ significantly from the third group by 700 mg. At day 42, the first group significantly increased compared to the third and control group.
