The Sudan Liberation Movement and its role in the secession of South Sudan 1983-2005

Abstract

The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) is an extension of the armed opposition it made to the southern rebels since 1955, represented by the Anyanya 1 movement, which took up arms in southern Sudan and fought a fierce war against successive Sudanese governments for 17 years that ended with the signing of the Addis Ababa Agreement in 1972, which did not enjoy the support of all southern politicians. As there remained a not insignificant section abroad of those opposing that agreement.
