A Study Of Laparoscopic Versus Open Cholecystectomy

Abstract

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is an established method for treatment of symptomaticgallstone but it is still a new method for surgical access in our province. Therefore, the aim of thisstudy is compare between LC & open cholecystectomy (OC) regarding the differences in theresults of operation & the role of LC in decreasing the incidence of post operative complications.70 patients were participated in this study & admitted in Tikrit teaching hospital from October.2001 to Oct. 2002. 21 patients operated with LC & 49 patients operated with OC. The result showsthat patients with LC have better convalescent period (less analgesia post operative, rapid restartingoral feeding, rapid mobilization from bed, shorter hospital stay & rapid return to job). The patientswith LC have a lower febrile episodes as a result from pulmonary atlectasis which is the maincause of febrile condition in OC patients. From the above results, LC is an good establishedmethod & can replace the traditional method for elective symptomatic gall stones in our province, since it regarded as minimally invasive surgical procedure.
