Abstract

In this paper, we have presented a modified transfer matrix methodto study the propagation characteristics and mode field profile forplanar optical waveguides with arbitrary shaped profiles. The proposedmethod giu", u new characteristic equation with mode index, 4, whichenables us to restrict the analysis for a specific mode. The characteristicequation has been formulated numerically using Fortran Power Station+.0 package. The application of this method to graded indexwaveguides are demonstrated.
