Speed Control of Induction Motor Using New Sliding Mode Control Technique

Abstract

Induction Motors have been used as the workhorsein the industry for a long time due to its easy build, highrobustness, and generally satisfactory efficiency. However, theyare significantly more difficult to control than DC motors. Oneof the problems which might cause unsuccessful attempts fordesigning a proper controller would be the time varying natureof parameters and variables which might be changed whileworking with the motion systems. One of the best suggestedsolutions to solve this problem would be the use of Sliding ModeControl (SMC). This paper presents the design of a newcontroller for a vector control induction motor drive thatemploys an outer loop speed controller using SMC. Several testswere performed to evaluate the performance of the newcontroller method, and two other sliding mode controllertechniques. From the comparative simulation results, one canconclude that the new controller law provides high performancedynamic characteristics and is robust with regard to plantparameter variations
