A Study of Recent Native Sulfur Deposits in South Eastern Basrah area -

Abstract

Nine rock samples were collected from yellow coloured fragments scattered in two neighbor sites in Abul-Khasib area. Field study and sampling were carried out during Feb./2005-Jan./2006. All samples were chemically analyzed by SEM technique. This analysis emphasizes that the sulfur content is 100%. The origin of this sulfur is not yet decided if it is native sulfur deposits originated from underground source ,which could related to the subsurface hydrocarbons seepage in the area or released biologically from underneath evaporatic rocks and dissolved in ground water which derived to the surface by capillary phenomenon, the sulfur which precipitated later by evaporation of salty water. This is a first study of this phenomenon, and it needs more detailed studies to predict a final real hypothesis.
