Evaluation of The Gonadotrophin Levels (LH & FSH) in The Sera of Some Iraqi Female Patients with DM1

Abstract

This study has focused on gonadotrophins (luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone) in the sera of (61) Iraqi female patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus with duration of the diseases equal to 8.26±7.7 year. In addition to control group involving (35) healthy women. We found delay in menarche about 1 year in the patients with DM1 when compared with the control group, and the family history to type 1 diabetes mellitus is present in (36.1%) of the diabetic subjects, and a highly significant increase was found in HbA1c range; (75.4%) of patients had HbA1c > 8.By using Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) technique; LH and FSH levels in the patient groups there were highly significant differences (P<0.01) when compared with the control group, so the distribution of each hormone was divided into three levels (normal, high, and low), and Patients were divided according to their menstrual frequency (normal cycle, oligoamenorrhea, and secondary amenorrhea), highly significant differences (P<0.01) were present between the levels; and between the mean concentrations of (LH and FSH) in these groups.Elevated HbA1c range had no relation with (LH & FSH) levels, but it might be associated with it. And no significant relation (P>0.05) was found between mean BMI and the hormonal levels (LH & FSH), menstrual frequency, and HbA1c ranges.Abbreviations: BMI, Body mass index; ELASA, Enzyme Linked(Immunoabsorbent Assay; FSH, Follicle Stimulating Hormone ; GnRH, Gonadotophin Releasing Hormone; HbA1c , Hemoglobin A1c ; LH, Luteinizing Hormone; PCOS, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome; T1DM, Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus )
