Flashes on the political history of Holy Karbala (1914-1920)

Abstract

The city of Karbala had its distinctive political history which is characterizedby the frank and obvious standpoints. Those standpoints played asignificant role not only in the history of the city but in that of the modernpolitics of Iraq, for the planning of the revolution of 1920 which broughtoutstanding figures took place in this city. Most of those outstanding figuresdealt with Iraq and its people.This study is divided into three chapters. The first one is about the nameof city Karbala in language and terminology, its other names and geographicalposition. The second one deals with the political history of the city after firstworld war until the revolution of 1920. In this chapter we have a study of thepolitical reality after getting news of the British forces heading towards Basraand forming groups of activists, let alone understanding the divisions concerningthe invasion and the autonomy practiced by the people of Karbala afterexpelling Othman authority as a result of the 1915 uprising. For this reason,the city became the centre of attention leading other nationalistic forces inNajaf, Karbala and the tribes in the centre of Iraq.tribes in the centre of Iraq.
