Aristotle fought against the Sophists’ argumentation schemes which were used to deceive the people. And he lent the door open for the systematic study of rhetoric and argumentation fallacies, and showed that the ultimate aim for argumentation is to influence rather than to deceive. Argumentation in the Arabic tradition emerged in the pre-Islamic poetry and orations. The Holy Quran fostered this tendency. Arabs were keenly interested in argumentation, so much so that rarely did it disappear from their writings.

السفسطائي لا يقتنع بحججه؛ لأنَّها لم تنشئها (الأنا) من الذات بل تنشأ خارجها، وغايته منها التأثير في الآخر وإقناعه بها. و حارب أرسطو السفسطائيين في آليات الحجاج التي كانوا يعتمدون عليها في خداع المجتمع وتمويهه، وفتحَ باب البحث لدراسة آليات المغالطة في الحِجَاج، ورأى أنّ الغاية من الخطابة والحِجَاج التأثير والإقناع وليس الفتنة والإيهام، أما الحِجَاج في التراث العربي فقد نشأ من الشعر والخطابة في عصر ما قبل الإسلام، وجاء القرآن الكريم ليرسخ تلك الصفة عند العرب، وأولى العربُ الحِجَاج عنايةً كبيرةً فلا تكاد تخلو كتب التراث العربي الإسلامي من تداول مصطلح الحِجَاج.} }
