The term is very rarely used not only in the field of rhetoric, but also in linguistic studies in general, and the concept is almost unknown to many scholars. What is more astonishing is that this term is used by Abdul Qahir Al-Jarjani (471 AH or 474 AH) – who is one of the pillars and founders of rhetoric – in his book "The Secrets of Rhetoric", referring to the rhetorical processes where the meaning of words is not understood directly, but indirectly through inferences via meanings of other words. These other words form terms that can be considered as the origin of other successive words. In other words, the words are created from meanings of other original words and replaced them.

يعدّ مفهوم الخلافة اللفظيّة واحداً من المفاهيم المرشّحة للاستعمال المصطلحيّ، ولكنّه مع ذلك لم يستحصل درجة الشيوع لدى الباحثين، فهو مصطلح نادر الاستعمال في مجال الدراسات البلاغيّة، لا بل في مجال الدراسات اللغويّة عامّة؛ إذ أنّ مفهومه يكاد يكون مجهولاً بالنسبة للدارسين، وقد نستغرب أكثر لو علمنا أنّ هذا المصطلح استعمله عبد القاهر الجرجانيّ (ت471ه أو 474ه)- أحد أعمدة علم البلاغة والمؤسّسين لها- في كتابه (أسرار البلاغة)، مشيراً به إلى الظواهر البلاغيّة التي لا يتأتّى استعمال الألفاظ فيها بشكل مباشر- من خلال الدلالة على معانيها- وإنّما من خلال الاستدلال على المعاني بمعانٍ أخر، تُوصل إلى تشكيل ألفاظ تكون بمثابة الأصل لمن سيؤدي دور (الخليفة) عنها لاحقاً، من خلال عمليّة استدلال عقليّة توصل إليها، أو بمعنى آخر: ألفاظٌ تُولد من رحم معانٍ دلّت عليها ألفاظ أصليّة، فنابت منابها في أداء المعنى.} }
