Many etiological factors have been implicated but trace elements, especially selenium, may play an important role.Objective: This study was done to evaluate the serum level of selenium in patients with psoriasis and it's relation to clinical types, duration and surface area of the disease.Patients & Methods: Fifty patients (25 males & 25 females) with different ages and different types of psoriasis were chosen for this study. Also 50 non-psoriatic volunteers, sex and age matched were served as controls, evaluated for serum selenium level.Results: The result of this study has shown that 94% of psoriatic patients have low serum selenium compared with 4% among controls (P=0.0006). The type of psoriasis may have an effect on serum Selenium (P=0.025), the lowest mean serum selenium is found in plaque (non-scalp, non-palmo-planter) psoriasis (58% of patients). The higher extent of body involvements is associated significantly with reduced serum selenium (P=0.0004).Conclusion: From this study we can conclude that selenium deficiency may play a role in psoriasis since most patients (94%) have low serum level.

الملخص:الخلفية: داء الصدف من الآمراض الجلدية الشائعة يصيب 1% الى 3% من الناس في جميع أنحاء العالم. هناك عدة اسباب للمرض ولكن عناثر العناصر لاسيما السلينيوم قد تلعب دورا مهما في أسباب المرض الأهداف: أجريت هذه الدراسة لتقييم عنصر السلينيوم في مصل مرضى الصدفية وعلاقته بالأنواع السريرية ومدة المرض والمساحة السطحية للمرض.المرضى وطرق العمل: تم انتقاء 50 مريضا (25 ذكور و25 إناث) من مختلف الأعمار ومختلف انواع داء الصدف لهذه الدراسة وكذلك تم تقييم السلينيوم في مصل فئة مسيطرة عددها خمسون مطابقة من ناحية الجنس والعمر لمرضى الصدفية.النتائج: أظهرت نتائج هذه الدراسة إن 94% من مرضى الصدفية لديهم نسبة منخفضة من السلينيوم في مصل دمهم مقارنة بـ4% من الفئة المسيطرة، وهذا الفرق كان مفيدا إحصائيا (قيمة P =0,0006). إن نوع الصدفية يبدو مهما في تأثيره على مستوى السلينيوم كما أثبتت الدراسة (قيمة P =0,025)، واقل نسبة كانت لدى نوع الصدفية الصفيحية (58% من المرضى). إن سعة انتشار المرض كان مهما في خفض نسبة السلينيوم (قيمة P = 0,0004).الاستنتاج: من هذه الدراسة نستطيع أن نستنتج إن نقص السلينيوم في مصل مرضى الصدفية ممكن ان يلعب دورا مهما في مرض الصدفية لكون أكثر مرضى الصدفية (94%) أظهروا مستوى منخفض للسلينيوم في مصل دمهم.} }
