The tribes, and a large group of the Companions, may God be pleased with them, stood to determine its qiblah. Its length was fifty cubits by thirty cubits, then increases took place over its area. It was built of brick or mud. Al-Atiq, in addition to the name by which it was known since its foundation in the Amr Ibn Al-Aas Mosque, and the mosque was established for Muslims to perform Friday prayers and the five daily prayers, and lessons and guidance sessions, jurisprudence, hadith, Quranic sciences and literature were held there, in addition to being the place where the governor meets people In order to convey what he wants to convey, he has witnessed several urban developments since its foundation until the end of the Umayyad era, and I will address them with careful research after God’s success, relying on what I have available from sources and references dated in this regard

لا ريب انَّ للمسجد أهمية ومنزلة عظيمة في الإسلام ، وقد نوّه الله تعالى في القرآن الكريم إلى مكانة المسجد والمشتغلين بعمارته، فقال عزَّ وجل: { فِي بُيُوتٍ أَذِنَ اللَّهُ أَن تُرْفَعَ وَيُذْكَرَ فِيهَا اسْمُهُ يُسَبِّحُ لَهُ فِيهَا بِالْغُدُوِّ وَالْآصَالِ (36)رِجَالٌ لَّا تُلْهِيهِمْ تِجَارَةٌ وَلَا بَيْعٌ عَن ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَإِقَامِ الصَّلَاةِ وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ ۙ يَخَافُونَ يَوْمًا تَتَقَلَّبُ فِيهِ الْقُلُوبُ وَالْأَبْصَارُ (37) {،سورة النور، وعن النبي صلّى الله عليه وسلّم أنّهُ قال: أحب البلاد الى الله مساجدها .فعقب فتح بلاد مصر عام 21 ه ، بدأ القائد عمرو بن العاص في تخطيط مدينة الفسطاط ، لتكون قاعدة عسكرية لانطلاق العمليات العسكرية ، وسكناً للجند المقاتلة ، فبدأ بتأسيس المسجد، ليكون أول وحدة عمرانية تؤسس في المدينة وإلى جواره دار الإمارة ، ومن حولهما خطط القبائل، وقف على تحديد قبلته جمع كبير من الصحابة رضوان الله عليهم، وكان طوله خمسين ذراعاً في عرض ثلاثين ، ثم توالت الزيادات على مساحته ، وبني من مادة الطوب أو اللبن ، وسمّيَ على مدى الأزمنة بعدة مسميات منها: تاج الجوامع ، والجامع العتيق ، فضلاً عن الاسم الذي عرف به منذ تأسيسه بجامع عمرو بن العاص، و كانت تقام فيه حلقات الدروس والارشاد ، ودروس الفقه والحديث وعلوم القرآن والأدب ، وشهد عدّة تطورات عمرانية منذ تأسيسه وحتى نهاية العصر الأموي.
