@Article{, title={Anti-Hepatotoxic Effect of the Methanolic Anstatica Hierochuntica Extract In Ccl 4- Treated Rats}, author={Hasan F.Al-Azzawie}, journal={Engineering and Technology Journal مجلة الهندسة والتكنولوجيا}, volume={29}, number={2}, pages={413-423}, year={2011}, abstract={The study was investigated the hepatoprotective activity of methanolicextract of Anastatica hierochuntica using carbon tetra chloride (CCl4)-inducedhepatotoxicity in rats. The levels of liver enzymes glutamate oxaloacetatetransminase , glutamate pyruvate transminase ,alkaline phosphatase ,total Protein, total and direct bilirubin, in addition to Superoxide dismutase, glutathioneperoxidase activities ,glutathione malondialdehyde and total antioxidant statuslevels were evaluated in experimental rats (with or without CCl4-inducedhepatotoxicity)following intake of 100 mg/kg p.o alcoholic Anastaticahierochuntica extract by using standard procedures compared with standardsilymarin at a dose of 100 mg/kg p.o. Results showed that methanolic extract at adose level of 100 mg/kg had a significant decrease(p<0.05) in activities of serumliver enzymes, glutamate oxaloacetate transminase , glutamate pyruvatetransminase, alkaline phosphatase, total bilirubin and protein were significantlydecreased in rats treated with CCl4 after 4 weeks compared to that of silymaringroup in addition to the methanolic extract had antioxidant activity throughdecreasing activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase to levelsin control rats group. Histopathology of a liver tissue of the animals treated withthe extract was also studied to monitor the liver status. The liver biopsy of allexperimental rat groups treated with the methanolic Anastatica hierochunticaextract showed significant restoration of the normal histomorphologic pattern ofliver cells. From the above results, it is concluded for the first time that methanolicAnastatica hierochuntica extract offers protective effect against CCl4-inducedhepatotoxicity in experimental rats.
