Cases were those pregnant women who attended the mentioned maternity hospitals for delivery. They were chosen on consecutive basis. The data collection tool was a questionnaire prepared for this purpose. All included women were interviewed and examined at the time of admission and on the 7th and 42nd days post–delivery. At the time of admission 67.1% of the study sample had one disease or more. Follow–up of the study women 7 days after delivery showed that 78.2% had one or more maternal morbidity. While in the second visit (i.e., 42nd day postpartum) 71.7% had single or multiple morbidity. Maternal morbidity was significantly affected by maternal age (p < 0.035), partner’s occupation (p < 0.05), birth interval (p < 0.05) and birth attendants (p < 0.01). The present study indicates the causes and predictors of postpartum maternal morbidity in Mosul where almost all of them are preventable.
