Al-katib PY - 2004 VL - 1 IS - 1 SP - 10 EP - 14 JO - Medical Journal of Babylon مجلة بابل الطبية SN - 1812156X 23126760 AB - Aretrospective review of284 cases ofintestinal obstfliction admitted to the hella generalteaching hospital (Babylon) over a period of 5 years fiom (1/1/1998 to31/8/2002) was canied out.The main causes of obstructive were post- operative adhesions 1 05 patients (40%) . hemia87(30.6%) pseudo- obstuction 8 (2.8%) intussusception 18 (6.33%) malignant obstruction 67(23.6%) inflammatory obstruction 4( 1.41%)vohulus 3 (1.05%) and others 4(1.41%) surgicalintervention v/as necessary in 245 patients (86.25%) while 78 patients (27.5%) responded toconsenr'ative testnent . post- operative complications occured in 43 patients (15.2%) the maincomplications were wound infection chest infection prolonged ileus and intestinal fistulae themortality was 7(2.5%) the pattem of small bowel obstruction in Babylon similar to that in the westwhile larse bowel obstructioD is not uncommon
