This prospective study was conducted in 2 hospitals, Al-Taalemee Teaching Hospital and Al-Basrah General Hospital. Data collection began inSeptember 2008 to March 2009. Sixty two diabetic patients were included in this study, all wereadults aging between 18 to 80 years. They were type I or II diabetics and their last measuredblood glucose was 120-150mgdl. Patients physical status was ASA classification I or II and willbe subjected to elective major and super major operations. Twenty six (42%) patients appearedto have high level of HbA1c (more than 6.5%), so HbA1c level is more accurate than the bloodglucose in determining the good glycemic controlled patients and in isolation of high risk diabeticsurgical patients. The baseline glucose levels and HbA1c are useful in checking the efficacy ofthe therapeutic control of diabetes.
