There is almost critical consensus on the opinion that Austen was artistically conscious from the beginning of her creative career. The issue of inwardness was one of the technical matters she observed. Her novels evince some modern traits especially those related to free indirect discourse (speech, style) through which Austen cultivated inwardness. تمخض النقد المتعدد الأوجه للقرنين العشرين والحادي والعشرين عن ابحاث علمية حول التقنيات السردية لجين أوستن ويكاد يكون هنالك اجماع حول الرأي القائل بأن أوستن قد كانت واعية فنياً منذ بداية عملها الابداعي وكانت مسألة الباطن احدى الأمور التقنية التي كانت تراعيها وقد أظهرت رواياتها بعض السمات الحديثة ولاسيما تلك المتعلقة بالخطاب الحر المباشر (الكلام والاسلوب) والذي من خلاله قامت أوستن بتهذيب الباطن وكانت في ذلك سلفاً وبشيراً لتيار وعي فيرجينيا وولف وجيمس جويس.
