The Level of Social Interaction and its Relation to the Social Support among the Students of the Department of Psychological Guidance

Abstract

This study is to show the level of social interaction and social support for the students of the Department of Psychological Guidance and to know the significance of differences at both levels according to two variables, sex and study stage. It also aims at knowing the relation between social interaction and social support, if there is any. The sample of the study consists of (101) male and female students from the Department of Psychological and Educational Guidance/ College of Education/ University of Basra. The sample is chosen randomly from the students of the first, second, third and fourth stage for the year 2009/2010. The two researchers depended on two devices: social interaction measure(Altimimi 1993) and the social support measure(Alsarsi and Abd-al- Maqsood 2001). The credibility and stability of the two measures were verified. The researchers tackled the data of the study by (SPSS) and showed the following:The level of the social interaction and the level of the social support are high for the students of Psychological Guidance.There are statistically significant differences in the social interaction among the males and females of the sample in favor of males, whereas no statistically significant differences were found at the measure of study levels.There are no statistically significant differences in the social support, the sex variable and the study level variable.There is a statistically significant and positive relation between the social interaction and social support.On the light of the results of the research, the researchers presented a few recommendations.It is necessary to strengthen interactions among students through cultural activities, celebrations, scientific visits to different areas and through lessons and guidance.Students should be made aware of the importance of social interaction by giving them guidance sessions and guidance applied lessons.The researchers proposed some studies like:The influence of a collective guidance program on improving social interaction among the female students of the Department of Psychological Guidance.The influence of social support on psychological solidity among university students.
