Measurement of Mathmatical Thinking in University students: A Field Study

Abstract

Thinking is one of the mental processes - basic cognitive which directly contribute to teaching and learning processes, and mathematical thinking one of the types basic shaped by processes enrichment cognitive organizer of experiences and information theory and applied that require solutions to mathematical problems specific, or find relationships and conclusions based on the axioms and basics .And tries to find the current measurement of mathematical thinking among university students, by building a tool to measure this property, and then applied to first-year students and the second, third and fourth of students from the Department of Mathematics in the College of Education, University of Basra, for the academic year 2010-2011. It is both male and female sexes. The research sample consisted of (105) students and the rate of (59) males and (46) of the female, where randomly selected Mini and by the amount (40%) of the student community's (262) students.Through Answers members research sample, signals statistical analysis results, and using (t- test), and analysis of variance to an encouraging level and acceptable level of mathematical thinking among members of the research sample in general, in addition to the absence of statistically significant differences in this property among males and females, or between school years, where showered researcher of the need for measurement and evaluation methods and diverse teaching methods that enrich the mental processes of thinking and types.
