The study of bacterial growth on highand low-density polyethylene modified with AlhagiGraecorum

Abstract

In the present study, high and low density polyethylene with 35% of polyethylene weightcontents of AlhagiGraecorumfilms were investigated for their resistance to bacterial adhesion. All tested bacteriawere brought from the microbiology laboratory in college of Veterinary inBasrah University and diagnostic .The disc diffusion method was employed for this purpose. Bacterial growth on both highdensity and low-density polyethylene– AlhagiGraecorumcomposite were reported. Wecompared initial adhesion and surface growth of staphylococcus aureus , streptococcuspyogens, pseudomonas spp., aerugenosa, eschrishia coli and klebciala spp. A 5 mm polymercomposites disc were inoculated in the 9 cm Petri dish for 24 hours and the zone of inhibitionand bacterial growing were observed and recorded. After 24 hours the bacterial growing oftested bacteria were distributed all over the control agarwith surface growth on the polymericcomposites films. A dense growth with much bacterial adhesion on the surface ofpolyethylene-AlhagiGraecorumdiscs.According to the nature of high density polyethylenesurface, density ,diffuse biodegradability we found that the bacterial adhesion to LDPE ismuch than that of HDPE. It was found that the AlhagiGraecorumcontent have no clearinhibition against tested bacteria where this might be due to a limitation of the agar discdiffusion method. All obtained results of bacterial growth were explained in term of physicochemical properties of the microbial and biomaterial surfaces (AlhagiGraecorum in this casewhich comes from plant sources and in term of the cell wall of bacteria which is havingnegative electrical charge and the interaction between bacteria and other material depend onspecific interactions, such as electrostatic and Lifshitz–Vander Waals forces, hydrophobicinteractions and a variety of specific receptor–adhesin interactions .The differences inbacterial growing radius was obvious were the (1 -17) range in millimeter was obtained forboth Escherchia coliو and Streptocouuspyogenes respectively. Finally our product can beconsider friendly environmental material due to it’s biodegradability specially when buried insoil
