Abstract

King Edward I of England (1272-1307) sought to extend his influence and direct control over the British Isles. After he was able to control Wales in 1283, he wanted to replicate this in Scotland. In the Scottish throne he was found to be the heir to the throne. Alexander III in 1286 the opportunity to achieve that goal, he worked on direct intervention and put obstacles to the selection of the candidate for the Scottish crown so that he can be a tool in his hand pending the right time to be the direct ruler of Scotland and make it a subsidiary of the English crown.
