Effect of planting date and spraying of ascorbic acid in the vegetative growth of dill plant (Anethum grasveonlens L.)

Abstract

This study was carried out during the growth season 2016-2017 at the field of Medicinal Plants and Aromatic Unit, College of Agriculture, Basra University to study the effect of the planting date and spraying with ascorbic acid and their interaction on the vegetative growth and leaf content of some chemical components of the dill plant (Anethum greveolens L.). Two planting date (20/9 and 20/10/2016), the spray with ascorbic acid at rates of 0 ، 50 and 60 mg. l-1 was used. 20/9 planting date exceeded that of 20/10 in the plant height, number of leaves, number of main branches, fresh weight of plant, stem diameter, leaf content of nitrogen and vitamin C. However, 20/10 date gave significantly higher dry weight of the vegetative system, the percentage of dry matter, leaf content of total chlorophyll, carbohydrate and phosphorus content. Ascorbic acid significantly increased plant height, number of leaves and main branches, fresh weight of vegetative system, stem diameter, leaf content of total chlorophyll, carbohydrate, vitamin C and potassium.
