Abstract

This study include the investigation of the bactericidal andinhibitory effects of eight new derivatives of the compound 5,5-diphenyl-2,4-imidazolidine dione (II-IX) through Mannich reactionwith paraformaldehyd and primary amines (known to havemedicinal use), as antibacterial agents. The MBCs and MICs valuesof the isolated bacteria from Iraqi hospitals were determined byfollowing four methods: Broth dilution, Agar dilution, Diskdiffusion, and Well diffusion methods.The antibacterial agents were tested against the used bacterialisolates by using five concentrations (0.04, 0.06, 0.08, 0.10, and 0.20ml of 10-3 M solution) by following . Statistical analysis showed thatthe most suitable method was the broth dilution, were there was nosignificant differences (P < 0.05) between broth dilution and agardilutin, while there were significant differences (P <0.05) betweenbroth dilution and agar dilution, while there were significantdifferences (P < 0.05) between broth dilutin and other two methods(disk and hole methods). All synthesized derivatives hadbactericidal effect on the isolated E. coli in all the usedconcentrations. They all showed bactericidal effect on both of S.aureus and S. epidermidis, except compound V, Vll which gaveinhibitory effect only, in all the concentrations. Derivatives I, IV, V,VIII, IX were shown to have bactericidal effect on the isolated P.aeruginosa, while the other showed inhibitory effect only, for allconcentration .
