Abstract

Abstract:Background: Different organs differ in their liability for putrefaction. Some putrefact early such as brain, stomach, and intestine. Others delay in their putrefaction such as bladder, non gravid uterus, and prostate gland.Aims of the study: To answer the question: Dose thyroid gland putrefact early or late? As this has a role in determination of time since death with its medico-legal importance.Materials and Methods: Autopsy had been done on 122 cadavers chosen randomly during 6 months period in medico-legal institute of Baghdad. The thyroid gland was studied macroscopically and histo-pathologically to determine its different pathologies and their relation with the cause of death. Accidentally we noticed the state of putrefaction in thyroid gland in some of the cases. Results: It was noticed that thyroid gland delayed in its putrefaction in some of the cadavers with the presence of evident signs of putrefaction externally and internally in other parts of the body. Conclusions: From the primary results we concluded that thyroid gland delay in its putrefaction but this finding requires another future study that would take the subject in details.
