Abstract

The study involves finding local technique for activation of consumed (waste) Ion exchange resins (Cationic resins ) which are used in the industry on tonnage scale for the production of demi water (deionized) suitable to be used in the chemical reactions and feed to boilers in the electricity generations stations. The prepared resins were characterized by IR – spectroscopy and thermal analysis technique (TGA and DTGA). The reactivated resins showed interesting thermal stability characteristics, thus several thermal stability parameters were determined from the TGA thermograms and expected mechanisms schemes for their decomposition are included. The analytical efficiency of the resins was evaluated, and the effect of several factors on the efficiency of the resins was studied i.e. effected of treating time, temperature and pH. A comparative study was carried out for the new activated resins, waste (consumed resins) and fresh resins on Anion and Cation exchange resins. The loading capacity of the reactivated Cationc resins was higher than waste and fresh. The loading capacity of the activated resins towared the studied ions was in the following order :Ni+2>Mg+2>Cu+2>Pb+2>Fe+2 (mg ion /g. resin)
