The Rhetorical Meanings of Exception in the Glorious Qur’an With Reference to Translation

Abstract

The present paper deals with exception in the Glorious Qur’an not from a grammatical perspective but from a rhetorical point of view.It attempts to reveal any additional rhetorical meaning implied by exception in Qur’anic verses such as affirmation, showing weakness, showing mercy, threatening, etc. The study aims at (1) showing how rhetorical meaning is expressed in the source language SL, (2) showing how rhetorical meaning can be realized in the target language TL, and (3) pointing out some problems that may arise from rendering exceptive expressions. The study hypothesizes that translators may miss the rhetorical meaning implied in exception and usually opt for formal correspondence rather than explicating this rhetorical meaning. The study concludes that it is not an easy task to detect the rhetorical meaning implied by exception in the SL and express it in the TL though most translators opt for formal correspondence which is a better way for realizing the rhetorical meaning of exception.
