The use of Phragmites australis in water purification of sewage in the city of

Abstract

The present study deals with the current application of Phytoremediation system to treatment raw sewage from the internal assembly basin, as well as after release it from the sewage treatment station in the city center of AL-Nasiriyah in the winter of 2014. Phytoremediation was used to note the efficiency of the Phragmites australis in reducing the values of pollution environmental indicators and improve water quality and compare it with the values of those indicators at the station water .The experiment was designed by using three basins (three replicates) as well as basin control with the dimensions standard (120,55,65) cm. These basins were covered with the gravel , sand, sand agricultural with high (45 cm). 120 liters of waste water was added to each basin of experiment basins. The Environmental indicators for these water were measured before and after treatment at the plant as well as in basins every week for 6 weeks. P.australis it showed highly efficient in reducing the values of environmental indicators under study compared water pre-treatment and post-treatment in station. they have been registered a reduction in the concentrations of total dissolved solids , total suspended solids , biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, nitrates and effective phosphate rates (% 55.08 , % 96.67 , %92.61 , %93.33 , %87.12 , %75.75 ) respectively, while the concentrations of trace elements under study (cadmium, zinc, nickel, lead) were measured after the end of the experiment in water. P. australis exhibited highly efficient in reducing concentrations of these metals than it is before and after the station's treatment by (0.25, 0.72 , 2.13 , 0.72 ) micrograms / l, respectively . The current study show that the treatment plant in the city of AL- Nasiriyah inefficient in wastewater treatment while proved P.australis highly efficient in addressing water pollution indicators and so can use this technique (phytoremediation) on a large scale in such a type of processors.
