Juristic Applications of Metonymic Utterances in Islamic Sharia

Abstract

Metonymy is one of the essential topics that caused argument among scholars. They concluded many juristic issues based on this important fundamental rule. For the importance of this rule; the argument on this issue; and the juristic rules built on it, this topic will be discussed in the present study.This study was divided into an introduction, two sections, and a conclusion. The introduction discussed the importance of the study, and the reasons behind selecting the topic and dividing it. The first section discussed the definition of metonymy , its rule, and reasons. The second section discussed the metonymic utterances among scholars and their juristic applications. The conclusion discussed the most important results of the study like:1.According to rhetoricians, metonymy is an utterance that have other meaning than its conceptual one. While fundamentalists believe that it is obscuring the meaning.2.Metonymy refers to any utterance that that did not intend its meaning rather than the context it occurs in. 3.It can be used verbally and rhetorically.4.Metonymy has two types: superficial, and abstract. And metonymy is more rhetorical than plane language.5.Choosing metonymic utterance is made due to rhetorical reasons because it has a variety of meanings.
