Moral Values of Pre-Islam Arabs in Al Azhari's (d.370 A.H.) Tahtheeb Al Lugha

Abstract

The human controller that regulates pre-Islamic Arab life was moral values which was conventional at that period. They regulate the behavior of individuals and groups. Al Azhari mentions some of those values known by Arabs like generosity, bravery, loyalty, etc. Arabs were keen to transfer this cultural legacy to their sons urging them to have noble morals and high values and neglect bad values like envy, greed, etc. It was possible to discover important details of Arab social life at that period through Al Azhari's work. He clarified that Arab families paid attention to teach their children chivalry, horseracing, using different types of weapons in order to grow strong and armed with different martial arts. Neglected morals were despised by Arabs as mentioned by Al Azhari that they label the greedy as a sinner.
