Motivating Pupils to Learn Foreign Languages: A Field Study

Abstract

The current research aims to identify the factors that negatively affect students' learning of the English language, as well as the mechanisms by which students can be motivated in English language lessons. To achieve these goals, two questionnaires were distributed to a sample of English language teachers at the secondary level. The teachers ’answers helped in identifying the various factors, namely social, personal and educational that negatively affect students’ motivation. These answers also helped to identify mechanisms that help teachers create a desire for English on the part of students. Finally, some procedures were presented that are closely related to factors and mechanisms that would assist teachers in carrying out their teaching tasks.
