Thermally Stimulated Currents Technique to Study Traps in Insulators and Semiconductors

Abstract

Defects play an important role in case of semiconductors as their electronic properties are sensitive to the presence of defects and some of these properties are sometimes a direct consequence of this presence. The vast utilization of semiconductors in modern electronics demands an extensive study on the nature of defects present in these semiconducting materials. Amorphous materials are prepared by rapid cooling of the melt or condensing vapors on cold substrate. Due to rapid cooling, various kinds of defects are produced in amorphous materials. The defect density is therefore in general higher in amorphous materials as compared to crystalline materials. Many methods have been used to find out trap parameters in amorphous semiconductors. Most of these methods require junction preparation (Schottky or p-n junction). Due to difficulty in making junctions in amorphous semiconductors, methods which do not require the preparation of junctions, are preferred for studying the trap parameters. Thermally stimulated current method is one of them. The present paper thus reports a review on various methods of analysis for obtaining trap position and density from the measurements of thermally stimulated current in insulators, crystalline semiconductors and amorphous semiconductors.

Influence of Complexing Agent on Morphology Properties of PbS Thin Films Studied by Atomic Force Microscopy

Abstract

Lead sulfide nanostructures (PbS-NS) thin films were prepared using Chemical Solution Deposition (CSD) method by varying of the complexing agent. The influence of the complex agents and the different molar concentration of these reducing agents on the morphology and structure properties of PbS nanostructures were investigated. The other parameters: concentration of the reactants, pH of solution, and temperature of bath were kept constant for the all depositions. The structure and morphology of prepared PbS nanostructures were analyzed by atomic force microscope AFM. It appears that the complexing agent at which the PbS crystals were prepared had a strong influence on their form and morphology. Studies revealed that there is an improvement in the structural quality with changing the concentration in some range. However, too high concentration of complexing agent could lead to the degradation in structural quality of thin film.

Investigation of the Mechanical Behavior of Binary and Ternary Polymer Blends

Abstract

In this research, binary and ternary polymer blends were prepared by hand lay-up method with different weight ratios. The binary blends are epoxy/unsaturated polyester (EP/UPE) and epoxy/polysulfide rubber (EP/PSR) while the ternary blend is epoxy/unsaturated polyester/polysulfide rubber (EP/UPE/PSR). Impact, tensile and flexural characteristics for these blends were investigated at room temperature. The morphology of impact fracture surfaces for the prepared blends was examined by using the optical microscopy. The results revealed that the blending process of epoxy resin with UPE, PSR or both together within certain weight percentages forms compatible blends with improved toughness. The brittleness phenomenon of epoxy resin disappears with increasing the content of added polymer.

Dark and Illumination Electrical Characteristics of ZnS/Si Heterojunction Prepared by Pulsed Laser Deposition

Abstract

In this work, zinc sulfide (ZnS) thin films were deposited on silicon substrates by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) technique using Q-switched 532nm Nd:YAG laser with pulse repetition rate of 1 Hz. The electrical properties of the formed ZnS/Si heterojunction were investigated at different laser energies (700-1000mJ) and using 21 laser pulses for each sample. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of this heterojunction were observed in dark and under illumination and they showed photosensitive nature of this structure. The capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements were performed to measure the built-in potential of the ZnS/Si heterojunction fabricated in this work.

Structural Characteristics of γ-Al2O3 Nanoparticles Prepared by Laser-Assisted Spray Pyrolysis Technique

Abstract

This work describes laser-assisted spray pyrolysis (LASP) technique developed to deposit nanoparticles coatings with controllable particles size. In this process, droplets of a precursor formed by atomizer are injected into a deposition chamber using SF6 as a carrier gas. The study were focused once on the effect of variation of the concentration of precursor solution on particle size of Al2O3 samples, and the other effect of variation of SF6 gas flow rate on the particle size of the samples. Decreasing of precursor concentration (0.25-0.1M) caused to decrease of the particle sizes with increase in density of Al2O3 nanoparticles. Decreasing of SF6 gas flow rate (4.5-2.5)L/min caused to decrease of the particle sizes with increase in density of Al2O3 nanoparticles and homogeneity of the samples.

Effect of Substrate Temperature on Structural Characteristics of Nano Silver Oxide Prepared by Pulsed-Laser Deposition

Abstract

Nanocrystalline silver oxide (Ag2O) thin films were deposited by pulsed-laser deposition technique on glass substrates using Q-switched 1064nm Nd:YAG laser at pulse repetition rate of 1 Hz. The films were deposited at different substrate temperatures varying from 100 to 200 °C using 25 laser pulses for each sample at constant energy (900 mJ). The x-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns confirmed the formation of nanocrystalline cubic Ag2O phase. The best crystallinity was obtained by the samples prepared at substrate temperature of 150 °C. As the substrate temperature was increased, both the grain size and surface roughness increase too. The measured grain sizes were 77.38, 90 and 100 nm with r.m.s. roughness values of 5.86, 8.43 and 9.87 nm for thin films deposited at 100, 125 and 150°C, respectively. The deposited films showed high transparency (nearly 90%) in the wavelength range of 200-800 nm with energy band gap in the range of 3.75-3.93 eV.

Preparation of Refractory Mortar from Iraqi Raw Materials

Abstract

In this work, scraps from fire-clay brick were used to make refractory mortar by adding Iraqi kaolin (Alduejlh Zone) at different percentage contents (21, 27, 32, 40 and 47%). By crushing and milling, the mixtures of kaolin stone and fire-clay brick scraps were converted into powders of different particle sizes. The specimens were made as disks for the measurements of bulk density, water absorption, thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity and bond strength. The specimens with 40% kaolin showed the best properties as they are closer than others to the fire-clay brick properties.
