The Iraqi Journal of Applied Physics (IJAP) is a peer reviewed journal of high quality devoted to the publication of original research papers from applied physics and their broad range of applications. IJAP publishes quality original research papers, comprehensive review articles, survey articles, book reviews, dissertation abstracts in physics and its applications in the broadest sense. It is intended that the journal may act as an interdisciplinary forum for Physics and its applications. Innovative applications and material that brings together diverse areas of Physics are particularly welcome. Review articles in selected areas are published from time to time. It aims to disseminate knowledge; provide a learned reference in the field; and establish channels of communication between academic and research experts, policy makers and executives in industry, commerce and investment institutions. Characterization of (CdO)1-x(ZnO)x Thin Films Prepared by Pulsed-Laser Deposition for Solar Cell Applications

Abstract

In this work, thin films from (CdO)1-x(ZnO)x compound were deposited onto p-type silicon substrates by pulsed-laser deposition technique at room temperature with different concentrations of ZnO of (0.0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15 and 0.2wt.%). A pulsed Nd-YAG laser with wavelength of 1064 nm, pulse energy of 500 mJ and 500 shots was used. The crystalline structures and morphologies of the prepared films were investigated by x-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis, respectively. AFM analysis showed that the film surface became rougher when the ZnO concentration was increased. The current–voltage characteristics of (CdO)1-x(ZnO)x/Si heterojunctions showed that the forward current at dark condition approximately varies exponentially with the applied voltage. A photovoltaic device based on these heterojunctions showed a short-circuit current density of 3.1 µA and open circuit voltage of 3 V at x=2%.

Using Frequency Resolved Optical Gating for Optimization of Thermal Lensing Compensated Ti:Sapphire Femtosecond Laser System

Abstract

We report the characterization and optimization of thermal lensing compensated high peak power Ti:Sapphire femtosecond laser system, 4.0mJ pulse energy operating at 1-kHz repetition rate. Thermal lensing is compensated by employing convex folding mirrors and Peltier coolers while thermal eigenmode post-amplifier has introduced to retain the amplified laser pulse beam on the amplifier crystal. Single-shot second harmonic generation (SHG) frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) diagnostic technique is employed to characterize the output compressed laser pulses. FROG image is monitored by charged-couple device (CCD) attached to the personal computer and optimization of the laser system is observed by FROG image in real time. Grating detuning is carried out in the compressor to optimize the minimum possible pulse duration and pulse of 30 fs duration is measured at the zero detuning scale.

Abstract

This research focuses on using animal waste bio- fibers which obtained from chicken as reinforcement in a thermoset resin as (epoxy) at 5% volume fraction using hand lay-up method at room temperature. Short chicken feather fibers (CFF) were treated chemically in 0.5 Normality by sodium hydroxide. Some of properties were studied such as: modulus of rigidity, wear rate and thermal conductivity for composites. The result showed that reinforcement and chemical treatment improve modulus of rigidity and thermal conductivity compared with untreated fiber composites and pure epoxy and wear rate decreased with increasing sliding time for all samples. This study shows that the animal waste fibers can be useful reinforcement in many application industries.

Microhardness and Tension Measurements of Pulsed-Laser Surface-Treated Aluminum Alloys

Abstract

In this research, pulsed Nd:YAG laser with wavelength of 532nm and pulse duration of 100ns at different energies (700, 800, 900 and 1000 mJ) and spot size of 1.5 mm was used to treat surfaces of different aluminum alloys. These alloys are [Al-Cu-Mg], [Al-Mg-Mn] and [AL-Zn-Mg] and [Al-Si-Mg]. The effects of laser energy on the microhardness and tensile measurements of the used aluminum alloys were studied.

Abstract

This research was carried out to study the effect of weight fraction of coconut coir fiber treated withNaOH (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20%) and fiber length (1, 3 and 5 cm) on the mechanical properties of the unsaturated polyester composites. Some mechanical tests were carried out like: tensile strength, impact strength and flexural strength. The results show that all values of these properties were found to increase with the increasing fiber loading and fiber length.
