Water Quality Indices For Tigris River In Baghdad City

Abstract

Due to the deterioration of water quality within the last few years because of the increase of water consumption and the waste water production and disposal into the river The water quality in both surface and ground water resources was negatively affected .The concept of water quality index is used as a tool for water quality classification in Tigris River within Baghdad City .Twenty two parameters of pollution were selected to measure the water quality indices of Tigris river within Baghdad city .Those parameters were measured during (2000-2004)as average monthly values ,three water treatment plants were selected out of the eight water treatment plants that exist along the river.Al Kharkh water treatment plant to reflect the water quality north of Baghdad ,Al Wathba water treatment plant to reflect water quality at the center and Al Rasheed water treatment plant located south of Baghdad to reflect the water quality at this area .The estimated water quality indices indicated that the river quality deteriorate south of Baghdad and the geological and hydrological conditions played the prime role relative to the agricultural and industrial activities within the catchments on the quality of Tigris river .Furthermore ,due to the continuous decrease of flow and the simultaneous increase in agricultural and industrial development with time ,the river showed a general deterioration in quality while the worst years were 2002,2003 due to the significant decrease in the amount of flow .

نتيجة لتردي نوعية المياه خلال السنوات الاخيره بسبب زيادة استهلاك الماء وكذلك زيادة تصريف مياه المخلفات الى النهر ادى ذلك الى تردي نوعية المياه السطحيه والجوفيه .لذلك تم استخدام مؤشر نوعية المياه كوسيله لتصنيف نوعية مياه نهر دجله في مدينة بغداد ,فقد تم اختيار اثنين وعشرين عنصر من عناصر التلوث وقياس معدل تراكيزها الشهريه خلال السنوات 2000-2004 فقد تم اختيار ثلاث محطات معالجه من اصل ثمانيه محطات معالجه على امتداد نهر دجله وهم مشروع الكرخ شمال مدينة بغداد ومشروع الوثبه في مركز مدينة بغداد ومشروع الرشيد جنوب مدينة بغداد .مؤشر نوعية المياه الذي تم حسابه اشار الى ان نوعية مياه نهر دجله تتردى جنوب مدينة بغداد بسبب الظروف الجيولوجيه والهيدرولوجيه للمنطقه بالاضافه الى تطورالنشاطات الزراعيه والصناعيه وتناقص تصريف النهر,وخصوصا في السنوات 2002, 2003

Abstract

Abstract:The present study was conducted to demonstrate the effect of organic matter on characteristics ofthe Euphrates river at the center of Al-Nasiriyah city and its feasibility for domestic, industrial andagricultural uses. [This index is an efficient and successful method for descriptive and quantitativeassessment of organic pollution in different aquatic systems]. Four stations were selected, the first stationnear Al-Sharif, the second station near the thermal of electric power, the third station near the ZaytoonBridge at the city center and the fourth station near the waste water treatment station, the samples werecollected from water monthly starting October 2017 Until September 2018. Some physical and chemicalproperties were measured: Biological oxygen demand (BOD5), Nitrate (NO3), phosphate (PO4),Ammonium (NH4). The results of variables of water in the studied stations showed that the values ofBiological Oxygen Demand ranged between (1.3-24.6) mg/L, nitrates between (9.24-61.98) mg /L,phosphate recorded values ranged between (0.10 – 1.30) mg /L, and ammonium (0.10 – 1.4) mg /L.

Using of Nemerow’s Pollution Index (NPI) for Water Quality Assessment of Some Basrah Marshes, South of Iraq

Abstract

The current research was proposed to evaluate the surface water quality for drinking and irrigation purposes. The study aimed to identify principal pollutants of surface water by using the method named Nemerow’s Pollution Index (NPI) in some marshes of Basrah province. The water samples were collected from the monitoring stations and analyzed for thirteen physico-chemical parameters included pH, dissolved oxygen, phosphate, nitrate, calcium, magnesium, total hardness, potassium, sodium, sulphate, chloride, total dissolved solid, and electrical conductivity. Based on data monitored and recorded at five monitoring stations in the study area during cool and hot seasons in 2014, water quality of the marshes was assessed through Nemerow pollution index method. The results are compared with Iraqi and WHO standards. Water analyses presented undesirable values for almost all physico-chemical parameters, according to Iraqi and WHO standard limits for drinking and irrigations. Thus, all sampling stations reported high NPI value and water samples belonged to not clean water.

اقترح البحث الحالي لتقييم نوعية المياه السطحية لأغراض الشرب والري. تهدف الدراسة إلى التعرف على الملوثات الرئيسية للمياه السطحية باستخدام طريقة اسمها مؤشر تلوث نيمرو (NPI) في بعض اهوار محافظة البصرة. تم جمع عينات المياه من محطات المراقبة وتحليلها لثلاثة عشر معلما فيزيائيا وكيميائيا شملت الرقم الهيدروجيني والأكسجين المذاب والفوسفات والنترات والكالسيوم والمغنيسيوم والصلابة الكلية والبوتاسيوم والصوديوم والكبريتات والكلوريد و المواد الصلبة المذابة الكلية والتوصلية الكهربائية. واستنادا إلى البيانات التي تم رصدها وتسجيلها في خمس محطات مراقبة في منطقة الدراسة خلال الموسم البارد و الحار في عام 2014، تم تقييم نوعية المياه في الاهوار من خلال طريقة مؤشر تلوث نيمرو. تمت مقارنة النتائج مع المعايير العراقية ومنظمة الصحة العالمية. قدمت تحليلات المياه قيم غير مرغوب فيها لجميع المعلمات الفيزيائية والكيميائية تقريبا، وفقا للحدود القياسية العراقية ومنظمة الصحة العالمية للشرب والري. وهكذا، أفادت الدراسة الحالية بان جميع محطات أخذ العينات تملك قيم علية من التلوث وكانت عينات المياه تنتمي إلى المياه الغير النظيفة.
