Abstract

Background: This cross sectional study describes the prevalence of gingival recession, gingival bleeding and dental calculus in Iraqi adults covering the age range from 20-70yrs, and to evaluate the relation between gingival recession and periodontal break down use furcation involvement and tooth mobility as explanatory variables for periodontal diseases.Materials and Methods: The study groups consist of 132 subjects (72 males and 60 females) who attended the college of Dentistry for routine dental treatment, gingival recession , gingival bleeding and dental calculus were assessed at all teeth excluding the third molar. Results: There was an abundant amount of calculus in the lower arch in males especially because of smoking and this long standing calculus has a highly significant correlation coefficient with gingival recession and gingival bleeding. Gingival inflammation also is a common finding especially in males which is may be due to heavy amount of calculus and smoking where there was a highly significant correlation coefficient between gingival bleeding and smoking. It was also clear that females showed less gingival recession than males and that gingival recession tends to increase with age and it is more often on the lower anterior teeth due to calculus also there was a highly significant correlation coefficient between gingival recession and gingival bleeding, on the other hand a highly significant correlation was found between gingival recession and periodontal breakdown. Conclusion: Gingival recession, gingival bleeding and dental calculus are common in Iraqi adults. Gingival recession also is associated with destructive periodontal diseases.

Abstract

Significant numbers of patients are seen for surgery and anesthesia with a history of chronic substance abuse. However, little is known about how these substances influences anesthetic physiology and pharmacology.Abuse of substances may involve a socially acceptable drug (e.g., alcohol, tobacco), a medically prescribed drug (e.g., diazepam), or an illegal substance (e.g., cocaine). Knowledge of a patients substance abuse prior to administration of analgesia or anesthesia may prevent adverse drug interactions, predict tolerance to anesthetic agents, and/or facilitate the recognition of drug withdrawal. As the neurobehavioral effects of cocaine may increase the likelihood that a user will receive violent fatal injuries and is more prone to have emergency surgery, so we stressed here on this substance. Cocaine abuse is associated with multi-target organ involvement, including the cardiovascular, respiratory, neurologic, and hematological systems. Its use during pregnancy is also an independent contributor to the risk of placental abruption, preterm labor and stillbirth.

Abstract

This paper aims at presenting a pragmatic study of reference. Reference is a kind of relation that holds between linguistic forms and what they stand for in the universe of discourse. Two types of reference are distinguished: exophoric and endophoric reference. The linguistic forms, which are used in the process of exophoric or endophoric reference, are called referring expressions. These referring expressions take various forms. They can be proper nouns, noun phrases that are either definite or indefinite, and pronouns. They have different identities. The identity of a referring expression is determined on the basis of the co-text in which they occur. Finally, successful reference can occur only in case we pay a special attention to the role of inference on the part of the listener.

Abstract

At a time when many of our children are over-scheduled and over-stressed , we must ask ourselves what roles literature can play in their lives ? For many years , modern realistic fiction has been considered the most popular genre among young readers , perhaps because it was closer to the lives they know and , therefore , easier to read . such realistic fiction whether regional or historical provides opportunities for people to live vicariously in times and places they cannot experience any other way . Yet , sometimes many of the classic stories for children exist in the realm of fancy because of the timeless quality of such tales . Things that are most real in life can best be conveyed through fancy . Those who care about children and their literature have an obligation to inform themselves of the best and the latest thinking about the constellation of topics that will enable them to bring the two together most successfully . Writers usually believe in the vision of peace we offer our children insisting that violence , a brutal expediency and war are inevitable to get maturity . Apparently , it seems that it is nice to talk to children , to sing to them and to write fancy books feeding their imagination with dreaming tales of their futurely lives . Children want to feel some good tales to enhance highest ideals and purest dreams , then we expect our children to outgrow what we have taught them

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to compare nickel titanium and stainlesssteel spreaders penetration depth and load in lateral compaction. Thirty curved mesialcanals of extracted mandibular molars were used in the study. The canals wereprepared using step-back technique with Gates-Glidden. Afterward the teeth weredivided randomly into 2 groups. In part 1 of the study, the force required to inserteach spreader to within 1 mm of the working length in an empty canal was measured .In part 2, the force required to insert each spreader to within 2 mm of the workinglength was measured in canal containing a master cone. ln part 3, the depth ofpenetration of each spreader with a master cone in place using a 1.5 kg force wasmeasured. Using a t-test for paired samples, the results from pan 1 showed that nickeltitanium spreader required high significantly less force than stainless steels reader P<0.01 . ln part 2, a nickel titanium s reader re uired high si niticantl lessforce than a stainless steel spreader .As expected in part 3, a nickel titanium spreaderpenetrated to a significantly high depth than stainless steel spreader (P<0.0l

Abstract

Background: Using of denture adhesives improved the retention and stability of complete denture, so it is important for the success of complete denture treatment when it is used according to its indications.Materials and methods: This project was carried out in an attempt to measure and compare the effectiveness of denture adhesives (Boots, Super corega, and Lacalut denture adhesive) in a well fitting maxillary complete denture at various time intervals. The retention of well fitting maxillary complete denture with saliva alone and with the use of denture adhesives at different time intervals was measured as a resistance to dislodgment using loading apparatus. Results: The study revealed that there is a highly significant improvement in the retention of a well fitting maxillary complete denture after using any one of the three types of the denture adhesive. Statistically the three type of denture adhesives used in this study have approximately the same effectiveness with slightly difference in the time of action. Conclusion: The use of any type of these denture adhesives that were accepted by patient (whether vegetable gum or synthetic polymer, powder or paste) can improve the retention of the complete denture.

Abstract

The temporomandibular joint disorders are defined as a collective term embracinga number of clinical problems that involve the masticatory muscles, the TMJ andassociated structures. Myofacial pain dysfunction syndrome (MPDS) is the most common.functional disorder of TMJMany etiological factors have been blamed to produce pain and dysfunction of.TMJ such as stress, malocclusion and parafunctional habitsStress is thought to be responsible for hyperactivity of the muscles of mastication.which leads to muscle fatigue then muscle spasm and painThe purpose of this study was to determine the role of stress as an ctiological.)factor in (MPDSOne hundred dental students were used in this study and evaluated for havingMPDS. Another sample of one hundred persons from the general population were.evaluated in the same manner to be used as controlThe results of this study indicated that (55%) of participating students haveMPDS) because of the great amotmts of stress they are going through. While in control group there was only (7%).
