Blood Glucose Concentration and Ischemic Heart Failure

Abstract

SUMMARY:BACKGROUND:Schemic heart failure (IHF) is the most common cause of congestive heart failure. Several studies have revealed that hyperglycemia is an independent risk factor for the progression of IHF in the general population.OBJECTIVE:Is to evaluate the relationship between fasting blood glucose concentration and the development of IHF in patients with CAD.METHODS:This study included 28 patients with IHF, 22 patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) without HF and 22 healthy controls. Fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol, and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol( LDL- C) were measured in these two groups of patients and controls.RESULTS:The present study revealed that the mean (± SEM) value of fasting plasma glucose in patients with IHF (127 ± 7.64 mg/dl) was significantly higher than that obtained from CAD patients without HF (93.6 ± 3.96 mg/dl, P<0.0001) as well as from healthy controls (80.8 ± 2.52 mg/dl, P<0.0001). The mean values (± SEM) of serum total cholesterol and LDL-Cholesterol did not differ significantly among the three groups of the present study.CONCLUSION:This study showed that serum glucose level may play an important role (partially) in the development and progression of IHF in patients with CAD and normal cardiac contractile function.

Effect of Volatile Oils of Some Medical Plants on the Blood Glucose and Cholesterol Levels in Mice

Abstract

The aims of This experiment were to study the effect of volatile oils from three types of plants which are: Nigella sativa, Foeniculum vulgare and Rosmarinus officinalis, They are well known medical plants and they are used commonly in traditional medicine.Volatile oils extracted by steam distillation. The biological activity studied In-vivo by oral administration of volatile oils into BALB / C male mice at doses of (0, 1, 2, 3, 4) mg / g BW for (7, 14, 21, 28) days.Serum glucose level was decreased by volatile oil of Nigella sativa at dose (2 mg/ g BW) or more. The blood glucose levels was (94.5 ± 1.24 mg/ 100 ml blood) as compared to control group (129.8 ± 0.98 mg/ 100 ml blood). No significant difference in glucose level was noticed between control group and group 3 and 4 at the treatment with volatile oil of Foeniculum vulgare and Rosmarinus officinalis respectively.The study showed that the volatile oil of Rosmarinus officinalis caused significant reduction in blood cholesterol level at dose of (3 and 4 mg/ g BW) for (14 days) or more. The cholesterol level was (134 ± 1.82 and 128.9 ± 2.32) mg/ 100 ml blood respectively as compared to control group (159.87 ± 0.91) mg/ 100 ml blood.

تهدف هذه التجربة الى معرفة تأثير الزيوت الطيارة لثلاثة أنواع من النباتات وهي نبات حبة البركة Nigella sativa ، نبات الشومر Foeniculum vulgare و نبات الحصالبان Rosmarinus officinalis وهي من النباتات الطبية المعروفة التي يشار الى امتلاكها خصائص علاجية في الطب الشعبي. استخلصت الزيوت الطيارة باستخدام طريقة التقطير البخاري. تم دراسة الفعالية البايولوجية داخل الجسم الحي In-Vivo ، عن طريق التجريع الفموي للزيوت الطيارة لذكور فئران بالب سي BALB / C male mice بالجرعات (صفر ، 1 ، 2 ، 3 ، 4) ملغم / غم من وزن الجسم لمدة (7 ، 14 ، 21 ، 28) يوما".تم تقدير مستوى الكلوكوز في مصل الدم ، ووجد أن الزيت الطيار لحبة البركة بالجرعة (2 ملغم/ غم من وزن الجسم) أو الأكثر منها أدت الى حدوث انخفاض معنوي في مستوى كلوكوز الدم (94.5±1.24 ملغم/ 100 مل من الدم) مقارنة بمجموعة السيطرة (129.8±0.98 ملغم/ 100 مل من الدم). لم تلاحظ أية اختلافات معنوية في مستويات كلوكوز الدم بين مجموعة السيطرة وبين المجموعة الثالثة والرابعة التي جرعت بزيت الشومر وزيت الحصالبان على التوالي.تم تقدير مستوى الكولسترول . أظهرت الدراسة أن الزيت الطيار للحصالبان سبب انخفاضا" معنويا في مستوى كولسترول الدم بالجرعتين (3 ، 4 ملغم/ غم من وزن الجسم) لمدة (14) يوما" أو أكثر، حيث كان مستوى الكولسترول (134±1.82 ، 128.9±2.32) ملغم/100 مل من الدم على التوالي، مقارنة بمجموعة السيطرة (159.87±0.91) ملغم/ 100 مل من الدم.

Abstract

This study was aimed to investigate the cultural requirements for production of glucose isomerase by locally isolated Streptomyces sp.HM5The optimum conditions for production of the enzyme by submerged culture was achieved on broth medium containing 1.5% of xylose as a sole carbon source and inducer for enzyme production , peptone with 1% as a nitrogen source and 0.05% of each one of magnesium sulfate and cobalt chloride as a metal ions source with an initial pH of 7.5 during an incubation period of 72 hours at 35°C.This optimum conditions for enzyme activity attained 9.59 unit/ml it means the enzyme activity increased about 192% in comparation with those before using optimum conditions.

استهدف هذا الجزء من الدراسة تحديد الظروف المثلى لإنتاج إنزيم كلوكوز أيزوميريز من عزلة محلية من البكتريا Streptomyces sp. HM5 وكانت الظروف المثلى لإنتاج الإنزيم بطريقة المزارع المغمورة هي باستخدام وسط سائل يحتوي على سكر الزايلوز بوصفه مصدر وحيدا للكاربون ومادة حاثة لإنتاج الإنزيم وبتركيز 1.5% والببتون مصدرا للنتروجين وبتركيز 1% وكبريتات المغنيسيوم وكلوريد الكوبلت مصدر للأملاح المعدنية وبتركيز 0.05% من كل منها وبرقم هيدروجيني ابتدائي مقداره 7.5 بعد 72 ساعة من الحضن بدرجة حرارة 35م وقد امكن تحت هذه الظروف للحصول على فعالية إنزيمية بلغت 9.59 وحدة/مل وبنسبة زيادة بلغت حوالي 192% قبل تعيين الظروف المثلى.

Abstract

Back ground: Although adult stem cells possess plasticity that permit differentiation along newlineages, production of exocrine and endocrine pancreatic cells and insulin-secreting beta-cells fromadult non pancreatic stem cells has been considered controversial. We present that highly purifiedadult rat hepatic oval stem cells, which are capable of differentiation to hepatocytes and bile ductsepithelium, can also trans-differentiate into pancreatic exocrine-endocrine tissue, when homogenizedhepatic tissue is implanted into subcutaneous tissue .Methods and Materials: A total of 60 adult Swiss albino rats were divided into two groups . Group I, control group (30 animals) was injected with normal saline into the subcutaneous and pancreatictissue, group II (30 animals) has been exposed to 90% subtotal pancreatectomy with implantation ofhepatic tissue homogenate into marked areas of subcutaneous tissue .Results: During the first three weeks the animals of group II showed both high blood glucose andserum AFP levels, then gradually started to decline and became normal around the period of sixweeks and continued being normal till the end of experiment. The histological study showedregeneration and proliferation of small hepatic oval stem cells in the subcutaneous tissue around thesecond week and trans-differentiation of these cells into islet like cells and acinar like cells around thesixth week.Conclusions: Hepatic oval stem cell has multipotent character and can differentiate into new-lineagesand formation of different clonal cells, such as islet-like cells and acinar cells of the pancreas.
