Abstract

This paper deals with Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) as an emergent communicative environment. CMC mostly occurs in text – based modes such as web-chat , bulletin board , electronic mail , away messages , etc . By means of CMC , online classroom can be established with a variety of subjects than that of the traditional classroom. Students need to be trained to be persistent and disciplined in order to learn from online courses. Accordingly, this research responds to lack of studies written about computer mediated environment as of interest to discourse analysts and as a tool for teachers of writing as well .

Abstract

This paper studies relevance as the central principle of the interpretation of advertisements. In the advertisement the text and image convey a range of implications, and it must be assumed that the most likely interpretation is that consistent with the advertiser’s desire to reinforce favourable associations with the brand. Advertising, as mentioned in Encyclopedia Britannica (1974: 105), is essentially a form of communication through such diverse media as hand bills, newspapers, magazines, bill boards, letters, radio and television broadcasts and motion pictures .

يدرس هذ البحث مدى العلاقة بين النص والصورة في بعض الاعلانات التجارية في الانكليزية والعربية بصورة مقارنة حيث ان الصورة والنص في الاعلانات التجارية تنقل كما من المضامين الى المستهلك لكن الهدف النهائي هو خلق انطباع ايجابي لدى المستهلك فيما يخص السلعة المعلن عنها.

Abstract

The sentence is generally considered the upper limit of linguistic investigation. Several linguists have approached the problem of linguistic structure beyond the sentence. In the late fifties, studies of structure of whole texts began to appear as an awareness of grammatical relations obtained across sentence boundaries and increasing interest in discourse structure in general as well. Those linguists using the functional model, which is adopted in this study, to recognize the requirement for the linguistic analysis to be applicable to whole texts. As a result they made insightful contribution to the field of discourse analysis. Hence, there is a confusing tendency for translation theorists to regard the whole text, the basis of discourse analysis, as the unit of translation. Free translation has always favored the sentence; literal translation the word. Now, free translation has moved from the sentence to the whole text. Trosborg (2000:217) argues that the argument has been revived in the recent years by those who maintain that the only true unit of translation is the whole text. This view had been supported in discourse analysis which examines a text as a whole in its relations and cohesion at all levels higher than the sentence. The present study explores the connections that might usefully be made between discourse analysis and translation, and how can discourse analysis help the translator? It falls into four sections: Section one is an introduction which refers to some related definitions of the basic terms. Section two sheds the light on the discourse analysis studies . Section three discusses the concept and the significance of text as the basis of discourse analysis and translation. Section four is a concluding chapter of this study with some suggestions that may be helpful in solving the students' problems in the perspective of seeing the text as a whole.

Abstract

The analysis of discourse is the study of language in communication. Such a study involves contextual considerations and so it necessarily belongs to that area of linguistics called pragmatics. Pragmatics is concerned with the three- termed relation which unites linguistic forms and the communicative functions; these forms are capable of serving with the contexts or settings in which given linguistic forms can have certain functions. In other words, it is the study of the use and meaning of utterances in relation to their situation. Pragmatics, as an integrated approach to language, has lately acquired growing importance as pure formalist approaches to language are proving inadequate, as they fail to account for the whole process of linguistic communication. So any analytic study of the language of any piece of discourse must adopt a pragmatic approach which takes into consideration such notions as the context of situation, cohesion, coherence, text, co-text, presupposition, inference, and other notions relevant to the analysis of discourse.

يعرف تحليل الخطاب بانه دراسة لغة التواصل سواء اكانت محكية ام مكتوبة ؛ويهدف الى دراسة البنية اللغوية على مستوى يتعدى مستوى الجملة الى مستويات اكبر مثل الحوار او النص مهما كان حجمه ، ويهتم هدا الميدان ايضا بدراسة اللغة في سياقها. ويذكرنا هدا التعريف بمنحى اخر للدرس اللغوي وهو دراسة استخدام اللغة Pragmatics من منظور وظيفي؛ أي دراسة التركيب اللغوي بالاشارة الى عوامل غير لغوية كالنص والمتكلم الذي يستخدم اللغة والسياق الذي تستخدم فيه. .ولكي نفهم موضوع تحليل الخطاب واستخدام اللغة بمزيد من العمق؛ لابد لنا من التعرف على الجوانب اللغوية التي يتناولها هدا الميدان من اهمها : التماسك اللغوي للنص Cohesion؛ الوحدة الموضوعية Coherence؛ العلاقات المنطقية بين الجمل مثل الاقتضاء Presupposition والاستلزام Entailment؛ الاستنتاج Inference وغير دالك من الظواهر. وهدا يقودنا الى التحدث عن اللغة في سياقهاPragmatics وعن كيفية استخدام الجمل المقبولة نحويا ودلاليا في سياق مقبول.

Some Linguistic Resources of Subjectivity in Media Discourse: A Study in BBC English News Reports and their Arabic Counterparts.

Abstract

Subjectivity-objectivity dichotomy is widely of interest to scholars in general, and to linguists in particular. It becomes especially so when it comes to journalism, that vital vehicle of communication which is in daily contact with people to tell them about the world around them. One way of fulfilling objectivity in media is through informing readers of different languages equally by media institutions having multi-language services. To see whether it is the case, a number of English hard news stories and their Arabic counterparts from BBC are subjected to analysis. The analysis is carried out on the level of inserting or avoiding a number of subjective categories put by Iedema et. al. (1994). The study has shown that impartiality and even-handedness, although a goal frequently claimed to be followed by media institutions, is frequently violated.
