Evaluation of Water Quality Index of Tigris River for irrigation purposes in Amara city, Southern Iraq

Abstract

The aim of the study was to determine the suitability of water for irrigation on the basis of the quality indices. The study was performed during the period October to December,2012. The quality of water was assessed by testing parameters such as sodium [Na+], calcium [Ca++], magnesium [Mg++], bicarbonate [HCO3-] and chloride [Cl-]. The quality indices were evaluated and ranged as Electrical Conductivity (EC) [97.0 to 115.0 μS.cm-1], Total Dissolved Solid (TDS) [49.4 to 61.7 mg.l-1], Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR) [3.63 to 4.41 meq.l-1], Residual Sodium Carbonate (RSC) [-6.91 to -8.69 meq.l-1 ], Kelly's Index (KI) [0.78 to 0.96 meq.l-1], Permeability Index (PI) [58.07 to 63.48%] and Magnesium Ratio (MR) [22.39 to 37.44%]. The results were compared to the USEPA standard. All the water quality indices were suitable for irrigation. The calculated indices were well in agreement with USEPA. Waters of Tigris River were found within the permissible limits for irrigation purposes.

Abstract

The experiment was carried out in a private orchard at Shat-Al- Arab District, Basrah Governorate during the summer seasons of2011and 2012 in order to study the effect ofirrigation water quality and spraying with Tocopherol on growth and yield okra plants tolerance to salinity resulted from irrigation by salinity water and its effect on the yield parameters . Treatments included three sources ofwater i.e. tab water, tab water + river water and river water and spraying plants with Tocopherol at four concentrations 0, 50 ,100 and150mg. L.-1). Treatments ofthis experiment were distributed in Split Plot Design with three replicates, was Main Plots represents water sources, spraying with tocopherol represents Sub- Plots. Means were compared according to L.S.D. Test at significant level of0.05. Result could be summarized as follows : - Plants irrigated with tab water had a significantly higher vegetative growth parameters(plant height, leaf number. plant-1, number oflateral branches. Plant-1, and. plant-1), pod weight, pod number. plant-1, plant total yield (268.6 and 204.8 g) and hectare productivity (4.20 and 3.20 ton) for both seasons, flower number. plant-1 in the first season and fruits set percentage in the second season. Plants sprayed with Tocopherol 150 mg. L.-1 had a significant increase in plant height, number oflateral branches. plant-1, and leaf area. plant-1, flower number. plant-1, fruits set percentage, pod number. plant-1, plant total yield (179.3 and 178.5 g) and hectare productivity (2.80 and 2.79 ton) for both seasons. leaf number in the second season and pod weight in the first season. The interactions between the studied factors were significant in all stuided parameters for both seasons.

Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate the effects of cages of fish farming of Mussayyibdistrict,The fish farming have been selected at Euphrates river with in Mussayyib district-Babylon province the area of study extend 3 Km at the river and includes 541 cages in water with in 46 fish farming .Water samples were taken from 3 stations three times within one month for each two of them were taken from two water purification stations in mussayyib ,physical and chemical examination of water quality were taken ,The results for samples from the fish farming indicated that PH and salinity of water within acceptable levels, high proporation of dissolved oxygen and vital oxygen required were very high while the turbidity was more the permissible limits, the test and oder of water were not acceptable for the resuts for water samples of the water purifications stations which indicated that turbidity was high ,test and oder were not acceptable,pH within the acceptable level the TDS and chlorides were more than permissible limits while the polluted materials were more than acceptable levels.

لدراسة التأثيرات البيئية الناجمة عن زراعة الاسماك في الاقفاص العائمة والعاملين في هذا المجال فقد اختير نهر الفرات عند قضاء المسيب في محافظة بابل ولمسافة 3 كيلومترات التي تقع عليها46 مزرعة اسماك تضم 541 قفصاً و سحبت عينات ماء من ثلاث مناطق وعلى طول مسار النهروبواقع12 عبوة ماءكل عبوتين قبل وبعد كل موقع ولمرتين خلال شهري كانون الثاني وشباط عام 2013 واجريت الفحوصات الفيزيائية عليها كما سحبت عينات من الماء من محطات تصفية المياه في المسيب واوضحت الدراسة النتائج الاتية:-ان درجة الحموضةpH والملوحة للمياه كانت ضمن الحدود المقبولة وارتفاع نسبة الاوكسجين المذاب وان الاوكسجين الحيوي المطلوب كان كبيراً جدا ولا سيما في المياه المأخوذة من بعد الاقفاص وان العكارة كانت اكثر من الحدود المسموح بها وان الطعم والرائحة كانا غير مقبولين مع ارتفاع نسبة المواد الصلبة الذائبة والكلوريدات والعسرة الكلية.
