Fabrication of Advanced Cement Mortar for Building Anti-Bacterial Applications

Abstract

In this research, we have added nano anatase TiO2 as a partial replacement of Portland cement by a weight percentage of (0.25 to 1%) for the development of properties for protection against bacteria. The control mix was made by using "the cement to sand" proportion about (1: 2.75) with the "water to cement" proportion of (0.5) to study the structure, porosity, water absorption, density, mechanical properties, as well as anti-bacterial behavior. Inspections have been done such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscope (AFM) for mortar. Experimental results showed that after the addition of Nano powders in cement mortar, the structural properties improved significantly with the development of hydration of cement mortar at early age, reduction of porosity and the increase of density as well as enhancement in compressive and anti-bacteria properties that make the preparation of nano material very suitable for protection against bacteria.

في هذا البحث تم اضافة نانو تيتانيه طور (anatase) بوصفه كمادة استبدال جزئي للسمنت البورتلاندي بنسب وزنية ( 1% to 0.25 ) لأجل تطوير خصائص (الحماية ضد البكتريا) وتم إجراء مزيج مرجعي مع نسبة الأسمنت إلى الرمل 2.75:1)) . تم الحفاظ على نسبة المياه في الاسمنت عند 0.5 و تم اجراء فحوصات الكثافة، المسامية، معامل الامتصاص فظلا عن الى ذلك الخواص التركيبية AFM ,SEM وفحوصات Anti-bacteria بينت النتائج ان الملاط الاسمنتي يمتلك بنية منتظمة ومعامل خشونة انخفظت بعد اضافة الماده النانوية وتحسنت الكثافة و انخفاض في معامل الامتصاص والمسامية مما يجعل الملاط المحضر ملائماً لتطبيقات (الحماية ضد البكتريا).

Abstract

This work investigates the utilization of waste papers (natural and industrial) i.e (citrus aurantium and papers A4) mortars containing specified contents 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% of waste papers were prepared and cured. Mechanical characteristics such as compressive and bending strengths, hardness and water absorption were determined for the mortars mixed with the waste papers and compared with those obtained from the pure mortars. Results showed that the addition of waste paper leads to increase the hardness to (69 - 68.5) shore D for (natural and industrial) wastes materials respectively comparing with pure specimen 66 shore D. The compressed strength of the mortar cement specimen cured for 28 days from 13 MPa to (17-18) MPa for (natural and industrial) wastes materials, respectively.

يهدف البحث الى الاستفادة من النفايات الورقية (الطبيعية والصناعية) أي (أوراق الحمضيات كالنارنج والأوراق الصناعية (A4 واعادة تدويرها في إعداد مونة السمنت باضافات محددة 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% من أوراق النفايات. وقد تم تحديد الخصائص الميكانيكية مثل قوة الانضغاط وقوة الانحناء والصلابة وامتصاص الماء لمونة السمنت الخضراء الممزوجة مع أوراق النفايات ومقارنة مع المونة السمنتية النقية بدون اضافات و أوضحت النتائج أن إضافة النفايات الورقية يؤدي إلى زيادة الصلابة إلى (69-68.5) شور D لمواد النفايات (الطبيعية والصناعية) على التوالي مقارنة مع العينة النقية 66 شورD. ان قوة الانضغاط لعينة الأسمنت المغمورة بالماء لمدة 28 يوم ازدادت من 13 ميكا باسكال إلى (17-18) ميكا باسكال لمواد النفايات الورقية (الطبيعية والصناعية) على التوالي.

Abstract

As the sustainable construction intends to optimize the use of natural resources and because of the important of water resources, the self -curing could be assigned as sustainable strategy.This study introduces self-curing cement sand mortar with specific properties concern compressive strength, consistency by using sodium polyacrylate as additive. The sodium polyacrylate has wide ranges of uses for many purpose, for its ability to absorbe water and its good mechanical, physical and chemical properties. This study assesses the possibility of using it with traditional raw materials for developing self-curing high workability cement sand mortar which could be useful in many construction applications such as ferrocement slabs and building partitions. The study assigned the possibility of using sodium polyacrylate in gel fashion within cement sand mix as efficient additives for self-curing, as well as its positive effect upon compressive strength and consistency of cement sand mortar comparing with specimens cured with traditional technique of immersing them within water for week. Specimens of sodium polyacrylate to cement ratio (S/C) between 1 to 5 % as gel (with constant water cement ratio, W/C=50%) developed significant strength improvement in absent of any curing techniques, compressive strength upgrading ratio assigned between 1.12 to 1.25 with respect to specimens cured by water for seven days while excellent ratio (1.37) associated with positive effect of specific W/C ratio beside sodium polycraylate effect.
