Abstract

This paper proposed an algorithm to find the best location of shunt capacitor and size to reduce the total active power loss and harmonics consideration after assuming electric arc furnace (EAF) in the unbalanced radial distribution network. Demonstrated the results by using practical software (CYMDIST) as a tool, to determine power flow and find the best capacitors size and location that decrease power loss and improve voltage profile. The total harmonic voltage distortion at system does not exceed the maximum allowable total harmonic voltage distortion level (THVD%) compared with IEEE-standard 519-1992. To attain the goal of this algorithm, these algorithms are tested in 25-buses un-balanced radial distribution system and an actual part of Baghdad city distribution network that is content 66-bus for Al_JIHAD_feeder_5 11 kV network are depicted for the implementation of this analysis.

Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to investigate the power system stability enhancement via coordinated control of PSS and static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) based controllers. Also, investigate the effectiveness and dynamic interaction of STATCOM controllers in damping system oscillation. Proposed optimal pole shifting technique to design damping controller of excitation system (PSS) and STATCOM basedcontroller. The method is based on modern control theory for multi-input and multi-output system. Several control schemes are proposed. The effectiveness of the proposed control schemes in improving the power system is verified through eigenvalues and time domain simulations under nominal loading conditions. The analysis of cases under study show that, the STATCOM – based controller has good effect on improving system damping and the coordinated control of PSS and STATCOM – based controller provide the best means forstabilizing power system, more damping with less control effort than individual control

Abstract

Due to raise in demand, the transmission system becomes more exhausted, which in turn, forces the system to be more susceptible to voltage instability. The aim of this research is to study the enhancement in voltage stability margin by installation the SVC which is represented as Static of VAR Compensator or STATCOM that is represented as Static of Synchronous Compensator. Voltage stabilization dilemma considers an essential issue in the electric networks which may lead to a voltage collapse in electric power networks. L-index has been used to predict and identify points of breakdown voltages in the power system with sufficient accuracy. L -index has been employed due to its accuracy and effectiveness in the computing voltage collapse points for different load buses with sufficient precision at a short circuit and also at various loads situations. Voltage stability index has been tested on the 9-wscc test system and 14-IEEE test system .Then it has been applied to the Iraqi national grid 400 kV. A shunt facts(SVC or STATCOM) devices are installed individually at the weak bus bar based on Voltage Stability Index(L indicator) detection, The simulation results are first obtained for an uncompensated system, and the voltage profiles are studied. The results so obtained are compared with the results obtained after compensating the system with SVC and STATCOM to show the voltage stability margin enhancement. The outcomes acquired after simulation demonstrate the performances of shunt fact devices (SVC and STATCOM) when connected to a system Subjected to 3-phase short circuit fault at different locations. All the simulation results have been carried out using MATLAB version 7.10 and Power System Analysis Toolbox (PSAT) package.

Abstract

In this paper, a new smart earthing method was proposed to reduce the current magnitude of single line to ground fault and thus reduce the damage caused by this fault. Traditional methods of earthing system were studied and compared with the proposed new method using simulation in the MATLAB program to show the superiority of the new method and its economic benefit. The power system characteristics depending on the selection of earthing methods such as charging current magnitude, overvoltage, insulation level, mechanical and thermal damage and fault clearing time are discussed. In this smart technique, a bank of earthing resistors is used according to the characteristics of the earthing fault (fault resistance value), which leads to the passage of a low electric current, but it is detectable regardless of the faults characteristics. Fuzzy Logic Controller technique is used to solve control problem.

Abstract

Single line to ground and double line to ground faults occurred in distribution power system which leads to high fault current that is returned to this system through earthing conductor. This paper proposed smart earthing technique to reduce this current. The fuzzy logic controller is used in this technique to increase or decrease the earthing resistance which connects the neutral of the substation transformer to the earth point depending on the measured faulted current. MATLAB/ Simulink is used to test the performance of this technique. This technique applied to (11) KV distribution power system model with real data from distribution substation in Karbala city. This smart earthing technique deals with any unsymmetrical earthing fault that occurs at any location in the distribution network with any fault resistance.
