The production of reactive oxygen species in most diseases including leukemia (type of cancer) is confirmed to be the most destructive process to human cell.Objective:-Potent antioxidant is needed to overcome the lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress. Polyphenolic compounds are group of naturally occurring compounds in different plants. They are promising product to protect, and prevent leukemia and many types of cancer by different mechanisms.

Background: Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease caused by abdominal obesity, such as hyperglycemia, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance.Adiponectin is a protein hormone that modulates a number of metabolic processes, including glucose regulation and fatty acidcatabolism. Adiponectin is exclusively secreted from adipose tissue into the bloodstream. Leptin, a hormone synthesized by fat tissue had been noted to regulate energy balance and metabolism.In this study investigated the relationships of adiponectin/leptin ratio with metabolic syndrome in apparently healthy Iraqi male adults.Objective: This study was designed to investigate the relationship of adiponectin/leptin ratio with metabolic syndrome in apparently healthy Iraqi male adults.Methods: Ninety male subjects were enrolled in study (mean age, 40.97 ± 7.94 years). Serum leptin level and adiponectin level were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. And the presence of metabolic syndrome was assessed.Results: Mean leptinlevel was significantly higher (7.29 ± 0.38 ng/ml), whileadiponectin andadiponectin/leptinratio was significantly lower(4.78 ± 0.24 µg/ml; 0.74 ± 0.07) respectively in subjects with MS. With increasingnumber of metabolic syndrome components, the mean values of leptinincreased and the adiponectin andadiponectin/leptindecreased. Conclusion: adiponectin/leptinratio correlated well with the presence and number of metabolic syndrome components in Iraqi male subjects. الخلفية : متلازمة الأيض هي مجموعة من عوامل الخطورة المسببة للأصابة بتصلب الشرايين وأمراض القلب التي تسببها السمنة ومنها زيادة مستوى السكر بالدم و أرتفاع ضغط الدم وأختلال الشحمانية ومقاومة الأنسولين.الأديبونكتين هو هرمون بروتيني ينظم عدد من المسارات الأيضية من ضمنها تنظيم الكلوكوز وتقويض الأحماض الدهنية . يفرز هرمون الاديبونكتين بصورة حصرية من الخلايا الشحمية الى مجرى الدم .هرمون النحافة هو هرمون يصنع بوساطة الخلايا الدهنية لوحظ انه ينظم توازن الطاقة والأيض .نتحرى في هذة الدراسة العلاقة بين نسبة هرمون الاديبونكتين / هرمون النحافة ومتلازمة الايض في الذكور العراقيين الاصحاء ظاهرياً.طرائق العمل : تضمنت الدراسة تسعون ذكر (بمعدل عمر 40.97 ± 7.94سنة( مستوى مصل هرمون النحافة وهرمون الأديبونكتين تم قياسها باستخدام تقنية الاليزا (ELISA) . وقد تم تحديد وجود متلازمة الأيض.النتائج : متوسط مستوى هرمون النحافة يظهر أرتباط معنوي أعلى (7.29 ± 0.38 ng/ml)بينما هرمون الأديبونكتين ونسبة هرمون الأديبونكتين /هورمون النحافة أظهرت أرتباط معنوي أقل (4.78 ± 0.24µg/ml; 0.74 ± 0.07)على التوالي,لدى الاشخاص المصابين بمتلازمة الايض.يزداد معدل قيم هرمون النحافة ويقل هرمون الأديبونكتين ونسبة هرمون الأديبونكتين /هرمون النحافة بزيادة عدد مكونات متلازمة الأيض.الاستنتاج:نسبة هرمون الأديبونكتين / هرمون النحافة تتناسب جيداً مع وجود وعدد مكونات متلازمة الأيض في الذكور العراقيين.

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is disorder of diarthrodial joints characterized clinically by pain and functional limitation. Rheumatoid factor (RF) represents one of routine laboratory tests that done for all patients have joint complaints. Chloroquine phosphate (CQP) is a disease modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) used for patients suffer from knee osteoarthritis (KOA) in order to reduce their RF value and improves the disease status. Objective: To evaluate the effect of chloroquine phosphate on rheumatoid factor (RF) level in serum of patients with knee osteoarthritis KOA) Design: case report.Subjects and methods: RF value were assessed quantitatively by ELISA technique before and after treatmtnt for a total of fifty five patients with KOA (30 femal and 25 male) their age ranged from (50-66 years) selected randomly from out patient clinic in Baghdad Teaching Hospital , Medical City Baghdad; suffering from KOA. All patients were treated with oral dosage form of CQP for one month twice daily.Results: Mean serum RF level was significantly reduced (p<0.05) in serum of patients after treatment with CQP for one month.Conclusion:CQP is a disease modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) used for patients suffering from KOA in order to reduce their RF value and improves the disease status.

Background: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a very common cause of multiple regional musculoskeletal (MSK) pain and disability; it is characterized by chronic widespread for at least three months and tender points identified by the American Collage of Rheumatology (ACR).The cause of FMS is currently unknown. However, several hypotheses have been developed including genetic predisposition. This study aims to evaluate the contribution of serum lipid profile to the pathophysiology of FMS.
Patients & Methods: The study has included 160 patients with FMS with age range (18-72) years and 60 control individuals who were age and sex matching with FMS patients: 29 patients with chronic musculoskeletal complaints but without FMS and 31 healthy controls. Colorimetric method was used to determine serum lipid profile. Results were evaluated using descriptive and inferential statistics; data were expressed as (mean ± SEM). P value of <0.05 was accepted as significant.
Results: There were no significant differences among the three subject groups in serum lipid profile.Conclusion: .

Background: New data suggests that joint damage in Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) may be
caused by systemic factors like adipose tissue products; Adipokines, which may provide a
metabolic link between obesity & KOA. Recently, one of the known adipokines named
LEPTIN has been linked to KOA because it can be detected in serum & synovial fluid of
patients with KOA.
Objective: To evaluate the contribution of Leptin & serum lipids to the pathophysiology of
Osteoarthritis in Iraqi patients with Knee OA.
Subjects& Methods: The study was carried on 90 subjects divided into four groups:
Knee Osteoarthritis cases group (n=60).
Control group (n=30).
Obese subjects group (n=60).
Non-obese subjects group (n=30).
KOA cases were diagnosed clinically whereas obesity was specified by BMI ≥25kg/m2. For
all subjects studied measurements of fasting serum leptin and lipid profile have been done.
Results: Mean serum leptin level was significantly higher in KOA cases compared to control
group (P<0.001), and higher in obese than non-obese subjects (P<0.001). Serum leptin level
also showed a strong positive correlation with BMI (r=0.501, P<0.01).
Conclusions: Leptin may play an important role in the pathogenesis of KOA. In addition
abnormal lipid profile and obesity are important risk factors for KOA.

ABSTRACT:BACKGROUND:Diabetes mellitus is a heterogeneous condition reflecting different metabolic disorders accompanied by a variety of complications. In DM, there is a change in oxidative stress (elevation in free radical generation with increase lipid peroxidation and derived oxidized products, and serum lipid profile abnormalities.OBJECTIVE:Several free radical species are normally produced in the body to perform specific functions. Increased free radicals in diabetes may cause the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, and the degenerative disorders. In the present study, the oxidative stress in type 2 diabetic male patients was evaluated by estimating the lipid peroxidation. Malondialdehyde (MDA) is one of the major aldehyde derived from lipid peroxidation. PATIENTS AND METHODS:Serum MDA, Oxidized HDL (ox.HDL), and lipid profile were measured after 12 hr fasting in 30 diabetic patients, their age range was (40-55) years and compared with 30 healthy controls. RESULTS:Serum MDA and ox.HDL were significantly increased in the diabetic group (P<0.05). All patients had significant elevation in serum levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and LDL particles size index (TG/HDL-C ratio). CONCLUSION:This may be due to different glycemic control in these patients. There was a significant positive correlation between serum MDA and LDLs size index, while serum MDA was negatively correlated with serum HDL-C in diabetic patients. Our results indicate that oxidative stress status increases during type 2 diabetes mellitus in parallel to glucose and lipid changes

background: Acute Coronary Syndromes (ACS) represents a pathological, diagnostic, and risk continuum from unstable angina through myocardial infarction (MI) with or without ST-segment elevation. These three conditions share a very similar pathology, although treatment differs. Elevated markers of inflammation, in particular hs-CRP, are associated with an increased risk of future cardiovascular events in healthy subjects, Increased oxidative stress and the generation of the free oxygen radicals can result in modification of LDL to oxidized LDL that could lead to atherosclerotic lesions, Elevated levels of CK-MB have been regarded as biochemical markers of myocyte necrosis.Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive value of CK-MB and oxidative stress (MDA) in acute coronary syndromes.Patients and Methods: One hundred one (101) cardiac patients were admitted to the coronary care unit, Ibn alnafees Hospital and Al kindy Hospital over the period July 2009 and March 2010 with the clinical diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome their ages range was (24-84) years, the number of male was (65) (64.36%) and female was (37) (36.63%).39 healthy control (age, sex, matched) were enrolled in this study. All cardiac patients have routine ECG, cardiac biomarkers measurements especially(CK-MB), serelogical markers (hs-C-RP),lipid profile test and oxidative stress markers(MDA).10 ml of blood needed for assessment of the above makers.Results: Oxidative Stress and Cardiac Biomarkers in Patients with Acute Coronary Syndromes (ACS) 101 were found significantly high in patients with ACS as compared to healthy subjects but significantly decreased in HDL-cholesterol in ACS patients as compared to healthy controls. ACS is associated with greater than normal lipid peroxidation.Conclusion: Our study shows a significantly increase in lipid peroxidation and cardiac biomarkers in the circulation of patients with ACS. A significant decrease level of HDL-C were observes only in ACS patients. These finding suggest these biomarkers may be useful diagnosis of patients with ACS.

Back ground : Chronic renal failure (CRF) is characterized by progressive destruction of renal mass with irreversible sclerosis and loss of nephrons over a period of at least months to many years which is treated either by dialysis which includes hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) or renal transplantation.
Objective : To document the elevation of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in Iraqi HD patients, and to what degree that elevation influences secretion of C-reactive protein (CRP), in addition to its association with other acute phase proteins and kidney function tests .
Method : A total of 75 individuals were included in the present study, 50 individuals were treated with HD compared to 25 healthy volunteers.
Result : The level of serum IL-6 showed a significant increase in HD patients , and this elevation lead to a high increase in the secretion of CRP as well as the differences in levels of other serum acute phase proteins; ferritin revealed an increase in its level , while alb shows a decrease in its level . Kidney function tests were detected in sera of all the studied groups, which showed an increase in urea and Cr with a decrease in CrCI in patients group.

BackgroundCytokines are responsible for the modulation of immunological and inflammatory processes and play a significant role in the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndrome patients (ACS).ObjectiveThis study aims to investigate the serum levels of IL-1α and IL-6 in ACS patients.MethodsThe study covered 140 subjects. It comprised a total of 101 patients with ACS patients [62 with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and 39 with unstable angina (UA)], compared with 39 healthy individuals with no history of cardiac disease. Serum IL-1α and IL-6 analysis was performed by ELISA.ResultsThe present results revealed that there were significant elevation in mean serum levels of IL-1α and IL-6 in patients with ACS ( AMI and UA) as compared to healthy control (P<0.001). Moreover, the levels of these cytokines were significantly higher in AMI patients when compared to UA patients (P<0.001).ConclusionThese finding suggest that IL-1α and IL-6 play an important role in pathogenesis of ACS.KeywordsAcute coronary syndrome, IL-1α and IL-6.
