Experimental Study Using Cinnamon Oil for Prevention of Diabetic Nephropathy in Rats

Abstract

ABSTRACT:BACKGROUND:Diabetes mellitus is the leading cause of chronic renal failure. However, in the early phase of the disease before complications have set in, the glomerular filtration rate is elevated and kidney size increased. The clinical importance of these early aberrations derives from the hyperfilteration (the heightened glomerular capillary) that drives damages the glomerulus, and the enlargement of the kidney (the glomerulus).OBJECTIVE:The aim of the present investigations is to examine histologically the effect of cinnamon oil on the kidney tissues of alloxan – induced diabetes rats.MATERIALS AND METHODS:Fifty male rats were used and divided into four groups: Group I =12 animal controls, Group II =12 treated with alloxan, Group III = 12 treated with alloxan + cinnamon oil, Group IV = 12 treated with cinnamon oil only.RESULTS:Renal tissues (Bowman's capsule, proximal and distal convoluted tubules) of diabetes group: revealed obvious mesangial expansion and basement membrane thickening. While the diabetic treated animals with cinnamon oil ameliorated the increase in the mesangial area in diabetic rats.CONCLUSION:Cinnamon oil can be recommended as an support for the prevention of alloxan – induced diabetic complications.

Abstract

SUMMARY:Diabetes mellitus is a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by abnormalities in carbohydrate ,protein , and lipid metabolism ,which is due either to insulin production or action . Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness , kidney disorders , disease of small blood vessels ……………and various other malfunctions. So theAIM:of this study is to investigate the effect of cinnamon oil as a natural source of a wide scale of antioxidants on prevention and treatment of oxidative stress in alloxan – induced diabetic animals , through biochemical and histochemical studies.MATERIALS AND METHODS :Thirty – five hamsters were employed in this study . They were divided into 4 groups . 1st group : 5 = animal control , 2nd group :10 = treated with alloxan , 3 rd group , 10 = treated with cinnamon oil and 4 th group , 10 = treated with alloxan and cinnamon .RESULTS :Renal tissues ( Bowman's capsule, proximal and distal convoluted tubules ) of alloxan – treated group revealed obvious increase in acid ( ACP ) and alkaline ( ALP ) phosphatase activity . While the 4 th group showed clear decrease in the activity of these enzymes as compared with group I & group III . CONCLUSION :Cinnamon-oil can be recommended as an support for the prevention of alloxan – induced diabetic complications

Abstract

Background:The diabetogenic agent alloxan is a selective necrosis of insulin producing cells .Alloxan accumulated rapidly in liver and pancreatic islets , this study was carried out to evaluate the antidiabetic effect of cinnamon oil on the destructive effect of alloxan in liver and intestine diabetic tissues .Materials and methods:Thirty male rats were used and divided into threegroups: Group I =10 animal controls, Group II =10 treated with alloxan, Group III = 10 treated with alloxan + cinnamon oil .Results:Liver and intestine tissues of diabetic groups revealed necrotic, degeneration of cells (histologically ) , increase in blood serum enzymes for acid and alkaline phosphatase , total protein ,cholesterol and triglycerides ( biochemically) , and increase in the activity of acid and alkaline phosphatase in liver and intestine tissues ( histochemically ). While diabetic group treated with cinnamon oil revealed decrease in all these parameters.Conclusions: Oral administration of cinnamon oil produce significant hypoglycemic effect restores liver function and normalize the histological, histochemical and biochemical abnormalities caused by diabetes in alloxan induced diabetic rats, this may be due to antioxidant effect of this herb.Keywords: liver, intestine, Diabetes mellitus, Cinnamon oil,Acid phosphatase, Alkaline phosphatase

Abstract

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by a high blood glucose concentration (hyperglycemia ) which is due to insulin deficiency and / or insulin resistance . As a consequence of the metabolic derangements various complications develop , so the aim of this investigation is to study(histological ) the role of cinnamon – oil on the testis tissue of alloxan – induced diabetes rat . METHODS AND METHODS : Forty -six male rats were used and divided into 3 groups : group I , 6 = animal control . group II , 20 = treated with alloxan and the 3 rd group , 20 = treated with alloxan + cinnamon . RESULTS : Testis of group I revealed normal distribution of seminiferous tubules and spermatozoa filled the lumen of these tubules . Group II showed reduction in number of seminiferous tubules , and absence of spermatozoa in their lumen , besides the significant decrease in testis weight . Group III elicited retrained these changes to approximately its normal view . CONCLUSION : This herbs ( cinnamon ) decrease or protect the destructive effect of alloxan on testis tissue

Abstract

Many herbs and plant extracts are added to the diet not only for their aromatic properties but they possess an important biological activity. The aim of the present investigation is to examine the biological activities (describes the beneficial or adverse effects of a drug and materials on living matter) of rosemary essential oil on liver and kidney tissues. The tissues treated with different doses of essential oil of rosemary (100, 200, 300, 400) ml. Histological examination of liver tissue treated with 400 ml of rosemary revealed normal architecture with rate of stimulating cells more than the other concentrations, without dilated and congested of portal vein.

تضاف العديد من المستخلصات النباتية والعشبية للغذاء ليس لصفاتها الاروماتية فحسب بل كونها تمتلك فعاليات بايولوجية . الهدف الاساسى لهذة الدراسة كان لمعرفة الفعالية البايولوجية (وهى معرفة تاثير العقاقير والمواد على الانسجة الحية) لزيت نبات اكليل الجبل على انسجة الكبد والكلية . اظهرت نتائج الفحص النسيجى للانسجة المعاملة بالزيت بالتراكيز (100 ,200 ,300 ,400) مللتر بأن الفعالية البايولوجية كانت متمثلة بتكاثر الخلايا وذلك بسبب وجود مراحل عديدة من الانقسامات الخيطية للخلايا فى التركيز 400 مللتر حيث ظهرت اكثر وضوحا مقارنة ببقية التراكيز لهذا النبات . وكانت نتيجة الدراسة ان زيت نبات اكليل الجبل يمتلك القدرة على تحفيز الخلايا الحية لانسجة الكبد والكلى والتى ربما تعود الى الفعالية المضادة للاكسدة .
