Abstract

ABSTRACT:BACKGROUND:It is well known that diarrhoea is caused by intestinal infection with parasites, bacteria, fungi or viruses.OBJECTIVE:This study was carried out to detect free living parasitic amoebae as a cause of diarrhoea .MATERIALS AND METHODS:Stool specimens from 120 patients suffering from severe diarrhoea with abdominal cramps were examined directly and cultured on special media for the isolation of free-living amoebae.RESULTS:In 120 patients with diarrhoea, 14(11.6%) showed presence of motile cells suspected to be free-living amoebae of the genus Acanthamoeba. These amoebae were isolated in culture in 4(28.6%) of the cases.CONCLUSION:Fourteen cases of non-fatal acute dysentery due to free-living amoebae without symptoms of meningoencephalitis is reported. Isolation of Acanthamoeba sp. from diarrhoeic stool was successful in (4) cases

Abstract

Diarrhoea associated with intestinal parasitic infections is a commonhealth problem in patients attending hospitals in Baghdad. The investigationwas carried out on the incidence of intestinal parasites and fungi in patientsattending Medical City Teaching Hospital in Baghdad.The clinical material is based on 3564 faecal examinations by wet filmpreparation and culture for intestinal fungi. The infection rate with one ormore of the intestinal parasites was found as high as 41.3% of the patientsexamined. The results showed that Entamoeba histolytica is the mostprevalent protozoal parasite which was recovered in 26.5% of the patients, theintestinal flagellate Giardia lamblia showed an infection rate of 7.4%.Dientamoeba fragilis was recovered in 23 cases (0.6%). The infection withsoil transmitted nematodes and cestodes ranged from 0.2 to 0.7%, theincidence of intestinal moniliasis and geotrichosis were 14.6 and 2.1%respectively. Two protozoal intestinal parasites Dientamoeba fragilis,Embadomonas intestinalis and one cestode Hymenolepis diminuta wererecorded for the first time in Iraq.

إن الإسهال المصحوب بالإصابة بالطفيليات المعوية هو من المشاكل الصحية للمرضىالوافدين إلى مستشفيات بغداد. أجري هذا البحث للتحري عن الإصابة بالطفيليات والفطرياتالمعوية للمرضى الوافدين إلى مدينة الطب في بغداد. المادة السريرية اعتمدت على فحص 3564غائط بواسطة الشريحة الرطبة والزرع للفطريات المعوية.إن الإصابة بواحد أو أكثر من الطفيليات المعوية بلغت 41.3 بالمائة من المرضى الذين تمهو الأغلب إنتشارًا Entamoeba histolytica فحصهم. وقد بينت النتائج إن طفيلي أميبا الزحارAl- Mustansiriya J. Sci Vol. 17, No 4, 20062فقد وجدت نسبة الإصابة به 26.5 بالمائة، يأتي بعدها السوطيات المعويةحيث كانت نسبة الإصابة 7.4 بالمائة، وإن طفيلي الأميبا Giardia lambliaتم تشخيصه في 23 حالة ( 0.6 ) بالمائة وقد سجل لأول Dientamoeba fragilisمرة في القطر. وإن الإصابة بالديدان الخيطية والشريطية تراوحت نسبتها من 0.2 إلى2.1 بالمائة. لقد Geotrichum فكانت 14.6 بالمائة وال Monilia 0.7 بالمائة. أما الإصابة بEmbadomonas intestinalis ، Dientamoeba fragilis تم تسجيل إثنان من الأوالي المعويةلأول مرة في العراق. Abstract

ABSTRACT:BACKGROUND:Exposure to Toxoplasma gondii may result in either chronic infection or acute infection, the latter being asymptomatic or symptomatic. Toxoplasma infection stimulates humoral immune response ,in addition to cellular mediated immunity. Also cytokines have a role in resistance to T.gondii like IL-5 which has protective role during infection with the parasite.OBJECTIVE:This study aimed to assess the correlation between IgM and IgG Toxoplasma antibodies and IL-5 in the course of acute toxoplasmosis .PATIENTS AND METHODS :45women suspected of having toxoplasmosis were tested by ELISA IgM and IgG toxoplasma antibodies , and the level of serum IL-5 was tested using ELISA technique only on 32 women .RESULTS:The results showed that there are higher titer of IgM and IgG-Toxoplasma antibodies and higher levels of serum IL-5 in women with Toxoplasma infection .CONCLUSION:Serum IL-5 can be used as indicator to predict the presence of acute toxoplasmosis in pregnant women at high risk to toxoplasmosis.

Abstract

Free – living or limax amoebae are
small free-living protozoans which exist in
fresh water and soil environment. These
amoebae were found infective to man causing
a fatal disease affecting the central nervous
system. Fowler and Carter were the first to
report four fatal human cases of acute
pyogenic meningitis caused by free-living
amoebae

. The genera Naegleria and
Acanthamoeba are incriminated in such
infections
2
. Swimming in contaminated water
has been frequently postulated as the way of
infection through the intranasal mucosa. Since
that time more than one hundred cases of
primary amoebic meningoencephalitis were
reported from different parts of the world. On
the other hand, the free-living amoebae of the
genus Acanthamoeba are known to cause eye
infection and keratitis

. The discovery of
progressive corneal ulceration due to several
species of Acanthamoeba were reported in
many parts of the world6,7
. We describe here
the first reported case of ocular
acanthamoebiasis in Iraq due to the infection
with Acanthamoeba sp.

Abstract

Background: Several biological factors such as bacterial infections and immunological status are implicated in predisposing individuals to bladder cancer. Bacterial infection of urinary tract has been related to increase the risk of bladder cancer.
Patients and Methods: Resected tumors of a total of 73 patients were obtained under sterile surgical conditions. Biopsy processing samples and culture procedures of biopsy samples were mentioned in the text.
Results: Bacterial growth was observed in 48 biopsy tissues of those patients represent (65.8%) while, 25(34.2%) yielded no growth (negative results).
It is obvious that E. coli is the most predominant organisms followed by K. pneumoniae and Ps. Aeruginosa. The other uropathogens isolated more or less of equal distribution.Conclusion: High frequency and great variety of bacteria in cystectomy specimens removed from cancer of urinary bladder. They were often Gram-negative pathogens (primarily Enterobacteriaceae).

Abstract

Background: Cytogenetic studies have been used to assess carcinogenic or mutagenic exposures and effects early in occupational, biological and environmental settings. Bacterial infection has not traditionally been considered asa major causes of cancer. Bacteria have been linked to cancer by two mechanisms: induction of chronic inflammation and production of carcinogenic bacterial metabolites.Objective: Because of new concepts in relating infection with certain malignancies the present study is performed. Therefore this study was conducted to determine the effects of bacterial products associated with biopsies of bladder tumor on human lymphocytes tissue cultures in vitro. Moreover, if there is any relation between these products for induction chromosomal aberration (CA) and formations of micronucleus (MN).Subjects and Methods: Chromosomal aberration and micronucleus assay were studied on six identified bacterial isolates of bladder tumor biopsies included 2 isolates of Escherichia coli , 2 isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and 2 isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae. The bacterial products activity for induction (CA) and (MN) were assayed according to the procedure mentioned in the text.Results: The results showed that each bacterial species have significant effects for induction different types of structural chromosomal aberration (CA) and formation of (MN).Conclusion: K. pneumoniae yielded high significant related predisposing factor in inducing different cytogenetic analysis followed by P. aeruginosa and E. coli .

خلفية: لقد استخدمت دراسات وراثية خلوية لتقييم التعرض للمادة مسرطنة أو مطفرة والآثار في وقت مبكر في ضبط والمهنية البيولوجية والبيئية. عدوى بكتيرية لم تقليديا تعتبر الأسباب الرئيسية ASA من السرطان. وقد تم ربط البكتيريا لسرطان بواسطة آليتين: تحريض من التهاب مزمن وإنتاج الأيضات البكتيرية المسببة للسرطان. الهدف: لأن مفاهيم جديدة في العلاقة مع الأورام الخبيثة عدوى معينة يتم تنفيذ هذه الدراسة. ولذلك أجريت هذه الدراسة لتحديد الآثار المترتبة على المنتجات البكتيرية المرتبطة خزعات من ورم المثانة في الإنسان مزارع الأنسجة اللمفاوية في المختبر. وعلاوة على ذلك، إذا كان هناك أي علاقة بين هذه المنتجات لانحراف تحريض الكروموسومات (CA) وتشكيلات من نويات (MN). وشملت درست زيغ صبغي وفحص نويات في العزلات البكتيرية التي تم تحديدها من 6 خزعات ورم المثانة 2 العزلات من القولونية، و 2 من العزلات الزائفة الزنجارية و 2 من العزلات الكلبسيلة الرئوية: الموضوعات وطرق. ويعاير النشاط المنتجات البكتيرية لتحريض (CA) و (MN) وفقا للإجراءات المذكورة في النص. وأظهرت النتائج أن كل الأنواع البكتيرية لها آثار كبيرة لأنواع مختلفة من الاستقراء زيغ صبغي الهيكلية (CA) وتشكيل (MN): نتائج. والخلاصة: K. الرئوية أسفرت عن ارتفاع كبير ذات الصلة عامل المهيئة في حث مختلف التحليل الوراثي الخلوي تليها الزائفة الزنجارية وكولاي.

Abstract

ABSTRACT:BACKGROUND:Infantile kala-azar is an endemic protozoal disease prevalent among children in Iraq. A rapid diagnostic laboratory tests are required for immediate treatment.OBJECTIVE:A prospective study was conducted in two pediatric hospitals in Baghdad during the period from Oct. 2005 to Sept. 2006 to evaluate the efficiency of immunochromatography strip test (IC) with rK39 antigen compared to indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) for serodiagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) to investigate its use for epidemiological studies in Iraqi kala-azar.PATIENTSAND METHODS:The study included 54 proved cases for Leishmania donovani (L.D.) bodies in bone marrow, 108 clinically diagnosed cases, 38 with diseases other than VL (tuberculosis, acute amoebic dysentery, urinary schistosomiasis, brucellosis, toxoplasmosis and malaria) and 24 healthy controls. In addition of 3000 patients presented with fever, anaemia and hepatosplenomegaly.RESULT:The highest sensitivity of the sera was obtained by IC (92.6%) and by IFAT (96.3%), and the highest specificity by IC (100%) and by IFAT (86.8%). In the epidemiological study with rK39 strip test 66.1% positive reactions were obtained in patients with fever, anaemia and hepatosplenomegaly.CONCLUSION:IC strip test with rK39 antigen was more easy to perform but less sensitive than IFAT and the former was more specific than the latter

Abstract

ABSTRACT:BACKGROUND:Kala-azar is a vector borne parasitic disease endemic in Iraq. This disease is complicated by secondary bacterial infections which may lead to death.OBJECTIVE:The study was carried out to detect the bacterial infections associated with kala-azar and the effective treatment.MATERIALS AND METHODS:Collection of blood, urine, stool and ear exudate specimens from 63 proved kala-azar patients. The bacterial isolates from the specimens were subjected to antibiotics sensitivity test.RESULTS:63 (46.7%) of 135 hospitalized children with visceral leishmaniasis, developing 102 episodes of infections. The sites of these infections were urinary tract 46(45.1%), lower respiratory tract 37(36.3%), gastrointestinal 10(9.8%) and middle ear 9(8.9%). Both Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria were isolated. Most of the isolated bacteria belong to the family Enterobacteriaceae. The antibiotics gentamicin, amikacin and co-trimoxazole were the most effective.CONCLUSION:Bacterial infections were common among hospitalized children with kala-azar. The commonest were Gram negative bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae.
