In psychoanalysis between the ego and the higher ego, the individual senses that he is wrong and that he committed sins or sins. In other words, guilt is a concern for the higher ego. The motivation for this concern is the need for innocence. Congenital conscience is the reference in terms of guilt or self-esteem This feeling is one of the emotions that the individual suffers when it comes against the social norms, the judicial and executive authority that enjoins virtue and forbids the evil, and the psychological power that criticizes and punishes us as we deviated from what we wanted for ourselves from, and that the person feels guilty for his mistake, This uncomfortable feeling is mitigated by responding to what is required of it in a manner that reduces it.

إن الضمير بصفة عامة، عبارة عن جهاز نفسي تقييمي تقويمي بمعنى أنه يقوم بالتمييز بين الخير والشر من جهة، وبين المفيد والضار من الجهة الثانية، ولقد يستجيب المرء أو لا يستجيب لما يقوم به ضميره من تميزات ومن توجيهات، وبذلك الطاقة النفسية التي يتسنى له عن طريقها القيام بتصحيح سلوكه، وتوجيهه الوجهة السوية والشعور بالذنب جزء من الضمير وهو ألم نفسي يشعر به الفرد داخلياً، أي أنه حوار داخلي بين الفرد وذاته. وبلغة التحليل النفسي بين الأنا والأنا الأعلى يحس الفرد أنه مخطئ وأنه ارتكب ذنوباً أو آثما، وبمعنى آخر فإن الشعور بالذنب هو قلق تجاه الأنا العليا، والدوافع لهذا القلق هو الحاجة إلى البراءة. والضمير الخلقي هو المرجع من حيث الشعور بالإثم أو تقدير الذات، وهذا الشعور هو أحد الانفعالات التي تنتاب الفرد عندما يأتي أمراً مخالفاً للمعايير الاجتماعية، وهو السلطة القضائية والتنفيذية التي تأمرنا بالمعروف وتنهانا عن المنكر، والسلطة النفسية التي تنقدنا وتعاقبنا إذ انحرفنا عما ارتضيناه لأنفسنا من، وأن الشخص يشعر بالذنب من جراء اقترافه خطأ، وأنه يستطيع أن يخفف هذا الشعور غير المريح بالاستجابة إلى ما مطلوب منه في سلوك يقتصد أنه يخفف هذا الشعور غير المريح.
