Water quality of Al-Gharraf River, which considered the main branch of Tigris River south of Iraq was examined using the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment Water Quality Index (CCME-WQI) for aquatic life protection and irrigation. Water samples were collected monthly from five sampling stations during 2013-2014 and 17 physicochemical parameters were analyzed: Temperature, hydrogen ion concentration (pH), electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, alkalinity, chloride, calcium, magnesium, sulfate, phosphate, nitrate, sodium, lead, cadmium, nickel and zinc.The model classified water of Al-Gharraf River as poor for aquatic life protection and fair for irrigation with seasonal overall WQI value of 30-39 and among stations was 38-39.

تم تقييم نوعية مياه نهر الغراف، الذي يعد الفرع الرئيسي لنهر دجلة جنوب العراق من ناحية صلاحيتها للحياة المائية وللري باستخدام دليل نوعية المياه لمجلس وزراء البيئة الكندي .CCME-WQIجمعت عينات المياه شهريا من خمس محطات على النهر لمدة عام خلال 2014-2015 وتم تحليل 17 من المعايير الفيزويكيميائية لجودة المياه وهي: درجة الحرارة ، تركيز أيون الهيدروجين (pH)، التوصيلية الكهربائية، الأوكسجين المذاب، العكارة، القلوية ، الكلوريد، الكالسيوم، المغنسيوم، الكبريتات, الفوسفات, النترات, الصوديوم، الرصاص, الكادميوم , النيكل والزنك. نتيجة التقييم كانت هي ان نوعية مياه نهر الغراف ضعيفة بالنسبة لحماية الحياة المائية ومعتدلة للري وكانت قيمة الدليل العامة الموسمية 30-39 و 38- 39 لمحطات الدراسة.

The present study describes the application of Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment Water Quality Index (CCME WQI) for irrigation uses for the 3 stations located along with Southern Part of Main out Fall Drainin Al-Nassiryia city, Iraq. The field work was conducted during the period from summer 2014 to spring 2015.CCME WQI was applied using nine water quality parameter (Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR), Electric conductivity , pH value, Bicarbonate, Chloride Ion, Boron Ion, Lead, Iron, Cadmium). Based on the results obtained from the index, the values of water quality index for irrigation uses of Southern Part of Main out Fall Drain ranged between(3.96 – 27)which indicate that river has poor quality for irrigation. The highest deviation occurred in,Cl-, EC.

استخدملهذه الدراسة دليل نوعية المياه الكندي لاغراض الري لثلاث مواقعفي المصب العام في مدينة الناصرية , العراق . تم العمل خلالالفترة من الصيف 2014 الى ربيع 2015 , استخدم في هذا الدليل تسعة عوامل كيميائية وفيزياوية لتقييم نوعية مياه المصب وهي نسبة امتزاز الصوديوم(SAR) والأس االهيدروجيني والتوصيلية الكهريائية وايون الكلورايد والبيكاربونات والرصاص والبورون والحديد والكادميوم . اشارت القيم التي تم الحصول عليها من قيم دليل نوعية المياه الكندي لأغراض الري للمصب العام التي تراوحت بين(3.96 – 27) والتي اشارت بأن المصب العام رديء النوعية لأغراض الري وأن قيم آيون الكلورايد كان العامل المؤثر الاكبر في قيمة الدليل .

The current study conducted to assess the Euphrates river (mid Euphrates) for drinking purpose adoption of water quality Index-Canadian model-as an effective means to identify the water validity of various purpose, as has been selected four sites and samples were collected from these locations for the period between May 2013 to April 2014 and its conducted some physical and chemical tests, which included: pH, turbidity, electrical conductivity, total alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, Biochemical oxygen demand, calcium, magnesium, chloride, total hardness, sodium, nitrates, nitrites, sulfates, boron, total coliform, lead, copper, zinc, cadmium, manganese and chromium. As used Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to determine the greatest physical, chemical and biological factors that influence in the Index and causing the deviation of it from normal values. The result of PCA confirmed that physical, chemical and biological variables have different effect in all sites of study area on the Index values whose ranges between71.83-36.4 that indicates Euphrates in the study area has the Fair-Poor quality.

Devastated by the combined impact of massive drainage works and upstream damming since the 1980's, Al-Hammar Marsh, Southern Iraq, has completely collapsed with 94 % of its land cover transformed into bare land and salt crusts by 2000. After a policy initiated to restore the Iraqi marshes again in 2003, the marsh recovered about half of its former area. As a part of the ecological recovery assessment of this newly inundated marsh, it is important to investigate the extend impact of desiccation after 3 years of inundation on water quality as the latter plays an important role in the restoration process of the marshes. Therefore, from a restoration point of view, major and trace element distribution and sourcing as well as seasonal variations were studied in the re-flooded marsh of Al-Hammar. First, the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment Water Quality Index [1] analyses applied revealed threatened or impaired water quality and conditions in the marsh that depart from natural or desirable levels. Second, multivariate statistical techniques such as Agglomerative Hierarchal Cluster Analyses (AHCA) that were used to analyze the data and identify the possible sources of water pollution in the marsh indicated that some elements such as Ca, SO4, Mg, TDS, Cl, Na, Co, and Ni are associated with natural sourcing while other elements such as Cd, Zn, Pb, and turbidity indicated a possible anthropogenic sourcing. Third, seasonal variations investigation displayed that the water quality is affected by natural seasonal processes such as evaporation and rainfall as well as biological activities. Dry season exhibited an increase in TDS, Ca, Mg, Na, Cl, SO4, and Cd due to the concentration by evaporation during the season compared to the dilution by rainfall during the wet season. In contrast, BOD and DO levels showed a considerable decrease in dry season owing to the poor water ability to hold oxygen at high temperature as a result of higher rate of microbial metabolism.

هور الحمار، جنوب العراق كان قد دمر من خلال التأثير المشترك لمشاريع التصريف وانشاء سدود اعالي الانهار منذ ثمانينات القرن الماضي مما ادى الى انهيار الهور بشكل كامل وتحول 94 % من غطاءه النباتي الأصلي الى اراض جرداء وقشرة ملحية بحلول عام 2000. بعد تطبيق سياسة لأنعاش الاهوار العراقية مجددا في عام 2003، استعاد الهور نصف مساحته الاصلية تقريبا". كجزء من تقييم الانتعاش البيئي للهور المغمور حديثا"، من المهم دراسة تأثير التجفيف- بعد 3 سنوات من الغمر- على نوعية المياه لان الأخيرة تلعب دورا" مهما" في عملية انعاش الأهوار. لذلك ومن وجهة نظر اعادة انعاش الهور تمت دراسة توزيع ومصادر العناصر الاساسية والثقيلة بالاضافة الى التغيرات الفصلية في مياه الهور. اولا"، تم استخدام مؤشر جودة المياه الموضوع من قبل المجلس الكندي لوزراء البيئة ]1[ اذ كشف المؤشر عن نوعية مياه مهددة ومتضررة كما ان ظروف الهور بعيدة عن تلك الطبيعية والمرغوب فيها. ثانيا"، تم استخدام أساليب الأحصاء المتعددة المتغيرات مثل تحليلات الهيكل العنقودي التجمعي وذلك لغرض تحليل البيانات وتحديد المصادر المحتملة للتلوث في مياه الهور حيث دلت هذه التحليلات على ان بعض المكونات مثل الكالسيوم، الكبريتات، المغنسيوم، المواد الصلبة الذائبة الكلية، الكلور، الصوديوم، الكوبالت والنيكل تكون ذات مصادر طبيعية في حين ان الكادميوم، الزنك,الرصاص، والعكرة كانت ذات مصادر بسبب الانسان. ثالثا"، فحص التغيرات الفصلية اظهر ان نوعية المياه تتأثر بالعمليات الفصلية الطبيعية كالتبخر والامطار بالاضافة الى الفعاليات البايولوجية. الفصل الجاف اظهر زيادة في المواد الصلبة الذائبة الكلية ، الكالسيوم، المغنسيوم، الصوديوم، الكلور، الكبريتات، والكادميوم وذلك نتيجة زيادة تراكيزها بسبب التبخر في ذلك الفصل مقارنة" بالتخفيف الذي يحصل بسبب تساقط الامطار في الفصل الرطب. على النقيض، فأن مستويات طلب الاوكسجين البايوكيميائي (BOD) والاوكسجين المذاب (DO) اظهرت انخفاضا" في الفصل الجاف الأمر الذي يعزى الى قدرة الماء القليلة للاحتفاظ بالاوكسجين عند درجات الحرارة العالية بسبب النسب العالية نسبيا" لعمليات الأيض المايكروبي في الفصل الجاف.
