Abstract

Educational institutions are one of the main trip generators and distributors in the cities around the world. The main campus of the University of Kufa has more than 10 faculties with more than 12,000 people (staff and students). This makes the university is one of the high attracting area of trips in the city. These attracted trips use different modes of transportation such as taxi, private car, min-bus and even walking mode. This study aims to investigate the travel behavior and travel patterns for the current trips and put the suitable suggestions for shifting the travel characteristics using efficient modern modes of transportation. More than 4000 samples have been investigated using interviews asking about the origin, the purpose of trips and the mode of trips. The results of this analysis indicate the urgent need for improving the current transportation system by encouraging public transport such as bus and tram. Moreover, there is a need for improving the design and traffic management for the gates of the university.

المؤسسات التعليمية هي واحدة من المولدات والموزعات الرئيسية للرحلات في المدن حول العالم. الحرم الجامعي الرئيسي لجامعة الكوفة يحتوي على اكثر من عشر كليات بعدد يتجاوز ال 12000 منتسب (موظف او طالب). هذا جعل الجامعة واحد من اكبر المناطق جذبا للرحلات في المدينة. الرحلات المنجذبة تستخدم وسائل نقل مختلفة كالتكسي والمركبة الخاصة والباص المتوسط وحتى المشي. الدراسة الحاليه تهدف الى اكتشاف نمط الرحلات واسلوب الرحلات الحاليه ووضع المقترحات لتغير خصائص النقل باستخدام وسائل نقل حديثة ومتطورة. اكثر من اربعة الاف عينة قد تم اخذها باسلوب المقابلات الشخصية حيث تم السؤال عن منبع الرحلة وهدفها ونوع وسيلة النقل. نتائج التحليل اظهرت وجود حاجة ملحة لتحسين نظام النقل الحالي وذلك بتشجيع النقل العام كالباصات والقطار الكهربائي. وعلاوة على ذلك فهناك حاجة لتحسين وادارة المرور لبوابات الجامعة.

Abstract

Baghdad Governorate is the most populated area in Iraq. It is experiencing rapid urbanization, economic growth, and motorization. The rapid increase in use private cars produced an increase in the traffic congestion, accidents, inadequate parking space and air pollution. Accordingly, it is important to investigate the need for a new transport policies and transportation projects based on Travel demand modeling. The present research methodology is based on update O-D matrix for Baghdad city and using it in travel forecasting to evaluate proposed urban mass rail services. In this study, three metro alternative routes were suggested, and according to demand estimation results, the best route will selected to meet future travel demand. It is concluded, peak hour ridership on proposed metro routes in the year 2014 is found to be 30000 passengers per hour per direction and the peak hour ridership on metro routes in the year 2035 reached 50000 passengers per hour per direction. On the other hand, it is concluded that travel demand on alternative route 1 equal 200000 and 400000 trips per day in two directions, while, load on alternative route 2 equal 360000 and 720000 trips per day in 2014 and 2035 respectively. It is concluded that, route alternative 2 and 1 recommended to be adopted to meet the travel demand requirements for the year 2035. The results of this study will provide the guide to the local transportation agencies to select the right decision, maximize their revenue and better allocate their resources.

Abstract

AbstractThe research studied the sustainability concept and its activationin the process of the planning of the decision making regarding withthe transportation and the basic principles to prepare sustainabletransportation plans for cities in order to analyze the complicatedproblems including the problem of using the classical methods intransportation planning in the cities in general and the sacred cities inparticular. These holy cities neglected the inclusion of environmental,economic and social impact in preparing transportation planstogether with studying the methods of evaluating the sustainabilityof transportation plans proposals and their application in thetransportation project of the holy city of Karbala in order to evaluatethis plan and show its shortages and manipulate them to make theplan become sustainable.The practical frame of the research involves the review of thetransportation plan of the sacred city of Karbala, which includes fiveproposals of transportation planning to the target year 2030, andapplying the stages of examining the sustainability of the plan by usingthe strategic environment assessment method through the applicationof compatibility matrix analysis and identifying the sustainable andunsustainable aspects in those proposals, and consequently reachingthe results of the evaluation which show that the transportation planof the holy city of Karbala is suffering from many shortcoming in themethodology of the plan preparation according to the sustainabletransportation plan preparation stages, and neglect many factorswhich have important impacts on the sustainability of the plan in thelong term and therefore it is closer to be a classical transportation planin a sacred city than a sustainable transportation plan.
